I need an entry or mid-level pro Canon printer that I can use to print photos, and which had WiFi capabilities so my wife can send documents to it from her laptop.

Is there no such thing, and should I just get a separate professional printer and let my wife use the current WiFi printer?

Which Canon printer would you recommend? Max size will be 8X10.

Well if you search Canons website a lot of their Pixima all in one printers all have wireless. I cannot recommend one as i never used them.. However, even you have a printer that doesn't have wireless built in you could easily just share the printer on the desktop/computer its attached to and every computer on your local network will have access.

Jay,

Just curious, but why are you limiting your search to Canon printers? I ask because Epson makes a very nice photo printer (the R3000) with wireless functionality.

The other solution is, as RCFURY mentioned, connect the nonwireless printer to your network via a USB cable and share it. I use Apple computers at home. Basically all you do is attach the printer to the Airport Extreme router with a USB cable and turn on printer sharing in the router utility software. That printer will be available to whoever is connected to the wireless network.

Todd,

Speak of the devil, that Epson was one I just saw in further research. It seems Epson makes a huge line of pro printers. That new R3000 is in my sights, esp with the Network capability. I would assume that Canon and Epson are the most commonly used printers at this level.

This new R3000 has very good prerelease reviews, I just wonder if you've had experience with Epsons at this level.

I have an Epson R1900 which I absolutely love. It's a couple years old, and not quite at the level of the R3000, but close. My R1900 will make prints that you could swear came from a photo lab... they will blow your mind. The R3000 are going to be better than those!

I like to make prints, frame them, and give them as gifts. I also printed several of my shots from the American Southwest on the 13x17 paper, framed them, and hung them on the wall. You won't be disappointed with any of the better Epson photo inkjet printers. One caution, the ink tanks can get a bit spendy if you do a lot of printing. I think the R3000 uses ink tanks that cost about $30 each, and you need 9 of them. My R1900 uses tanks that cost about $12 each. Just something to consider....

Exactly what I do. Thanks for that information, I checked on B&H about the ink cartridges listed with the R3000 and they're $13 each. It must use the same ink as yours. Wouldn't make sense to redesign all the cartridges as well.

I'm currently using a Canon ip5200 and while prints look decent at 8 x 10 look decent, I can't imagine what they'll look like with 8 ink colors instead of 4. I guess I should compare them to lab prints, huh?

You may want to double-check that. The R1900 takes #87 cartridges. I believe the R3000 takes #157.

You know, the R1900 has a $200 rebate going on right now. That takes the price to about $265. I paid nearly $600 2-3 years ago for the same printer, so it's a great deal. It does not have wireless, but it's a fabulous printer regardless, and a lot less money than the R3000. If you could hook it up to share on your wireless network using a USB cable, I don't think you'll miss the fact that it does not have built in wireless itself. That's how I have mine set up.

BTW, you can get print sample kits for several of their printers here:

Interesting. Also, you're right about the ink cartridges, it's a real turnoff to spend $30 per cartridge; however, the capacity of each is 27ml, which I think is double that of the $13 ones. Yes, I'm looking at the deal on the R1900 at B&H. They also have a deal on the R2880, which also uses $12 cartridges, but I have no feedback on that one. Couldn't find much here on a search.

It may not be a mid level or pro quality printer but my canon MG 5220 printer gives me better prints than my local walmart... it has wireless it uses 5 ink tanks 3 color and 2 black. I think teh next step up from this has 6 tanks or more. Im loving teh quality of this printer and at the moment don't see a need for anything bigger. witch is why i talked myself out of a smoking deal on a canon 9000 i think it was a few weeks back. was onsale for 199 down from i think it was 599?

+1 on the Epson brand. I couldn't be happier with my R2400. I have to admit, though, the R3000 has me thinking . . . . :)
