I finally had a chance to process these photos from May 2010.
There is a bar up in Monticello, MN called Hawk's Bar and Grill. Once a month in the summer they host a lawn mower race on their spare lot behind the volleyball courts.
It's a pretty basic dirt oval track that is tighter at one end then it is at the other. They water it heavily the night before the races, so it tends to start out soupy and then gets faster in time for the mains.
They don't have a strict set of rules here. Two really....
1. You have to start with a real riding lawn mower. No custom built frames. You can modify the mower though.
2. You are limited to an 18HP engine. You can modify it to get more power out of it, but you can't use an engine that originally put out more than 18HP. This rule is to keep engine size low. One guy uses a cement mixer engine, there is another guy that uses a kids ATV engine. They all started at under 18HP though so it's good.
These guys have tons of fun and help each other out in the pits. VERY friendly environment and more of a fun event instead of a competitive event. They are just there for fun.
Anyways, here are some of the better shots from the races....
