I have a couple m42 lenses but this 50mm f/1.4 gives me trouble.

IMAGE: http://darmok.dyndns.org/tmp/IMG_2352_edit1.JPG

The plastic tongue like thing you see comes in when you move the focus ring. But the inner diameter of this adapter ring is too small. When the lens is screwed all the way into the adapter it starts blocking the tongue.

Where can I get a M42 ring with a bigger inner diameter?

%%

Also, is there an overview of the different style focus screens? I think what I want is one with the 180 degrees flip in half of a circle, that is what I used on film cameras. But before I pounce on one I'd like to see how exactly these Canon screens with a couple lines do it.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

That would be an issue specific (well, sorta) with the Takumar 50/1.4s.

You need an M42 adaptor without an aperture stop down flange. They're actually rather hard to find as most sellers on ebay don't list which variety of adapter it is.

What other M42 lenses do you have?

An Alpex 135mm f/2.8. I don't think it has this problem.

I guess I can just give the thing to a machine job and have them enlarge the inner ring.

The adapter will work!!!

Looks exactly my like super takumar 50mm 1.4, and the same af confirm chip, and the exact same issue I had a week ago.

Here's how I fixed it.

Covered the rear element with a lens cloth covering as much as I could and any gaps, but leaving the switch exposed..

Carefully and tightly covered the entire lens with saran/cling wrap...

Held the lens upside down and carefully used a metal filing tool to file off just a bit of the switch. It's not the tongue. It's the little switch which is pushed in against the tongue when focusing to infinity and or tightening the af confirm.

Make sure you don't get any little metal shavings in the lens and/or body. I seriously did it for about 3 minutes max and took just enough off that it now works perfectly.

Let me know if this makes sense and you need further explanation.

As for the focus screen, I find the af confirm chip actually works surprisingly well in AV mode. I was thinking about buying one, but not now. Its good enough at this point.

It's a Super Takumar, yes. Makes pretty pictures if you don't mind correcting the colors. Also have polarizer and a filter for it. Fun :)

I think before I file down the lens plastic I'd rather file out the adapter ring.

I forgot to mention that I have a different non-confirm adapter but it has the same dimensions and the same problem.

No no no no. The problem is the hard metal switch/flange on the lens...the one against your adapter.

When you tighten the adapter, that squeezes the tounge...when you focus to infinity the rear element comes backwards, but gets jammed against the tongue which is being squeezed by the adapter, which is squeezing the flange.. Lol..

Trust me, just fixed is exact same issue last week. Take like a tiny tiny shaving off the edge of the flange that sits against the adapter and you're done. You should be able to tighten the adpater fully, and smoothly focus all the way from one end to the other. It's such a tiny little bit of room needed.

Some have it, some don't. I have one with and one without.

I think I understand what you mean (it's metal not plastic like I previously said). But I would still be happier to take material off the adapter, not the lens.

That will work too... Tighten the lens as tight as you can get it... Mark where the flange is hitting and grind away a tiny bit there... Same idea.

The part you circled In purple is what is causing the issue and it's seriously every so little give it needs...

Well I tried asking for the inner diameter on Ebay. That didn't go so well. I'll get a native Chinese translation and try again.

Its quite easy to tell if the adapter has a flange or not. The ones that don't have the flange are much thinner, this for example:

Ahh, but I need *some* of it. Otherwise the bolt that enables aperture control doesn't get pushed in :)
