Hi all,

I currently have the old Skyport transmitter/receivers (both universal and RX) and use it frequently to trigger speedlights, RX600s, D-lite 4s (non-ITs).

Back in the day, I'm pretty sure that the Skyports were advertised to sync up to 1/200th but I have found that I could only sync without the 2nd curtain showing on the edge of images at 1/160.

Now I am looking at the new SPEED transmitter/receivers and according to Elinchrom's web site:

  • Up to 1/150s shutter speed for SLR cameras in NORMAL mode.
  • Up to 1/250s shutter speed for SLR cameras in SPEED mode.

Anyone have any actual data on the sync speeds? I'm shooting with a 5dm2 that should be able to do 1/200.

And lastly, if I am using the SPEED skyports, will I be able to take advantage of the higher sync speeds with any strobe or does the strobe have to somehow be "compatible" with higher sync speeds in order for me to take full advantage of that?

Thanks! :)

If you have the skyport speed transmitter and receiver then you can theoretically shoot at 1/250th. With the 5dc or mkii cameras I have to shoot at 1/160 if I want to avoid the shutter showing up.

It only supports up to 1/250 with a camera with a sync speed of at least 1/250. Nothing short of a shutter redesign will make the camera's sync speed faster.

With a SPEED trigger set a 5D will sync at 1/200. Both the trigger and receiver have to be in SPEED mode.

My classic skyports do 1/250th most of the time, occasionally I have to drop back to 1/200. This is with D700 and various flashes.

I find the mkii has a faster shutter as at 1/200 or 1/250 the shutter is less apparent than with the "classic". Even with the SPEED I still got a little bit of shutter showing up. could just be my cameras though as I tested it on d-lites, bx-ris and a ranger rx with a-heads.

Are you talking about using the Speed Universal receiver to trigger your RX strobes or the RX tranceiver?

Using the new Speed transmitter (and either the Quadra's, BXRI's or Speed Universal receiver's speed mode) I was able to get a clean 1/200 on my 5d2, but not more.

Have sinced switched to the dark side and am enjoying a clean 1/250 and more than usable 1/320 without HyperSync :)

how do you switch between modes?? every time I turn it on it flashes twice, which is speed mode, but I have an old transmitter.

Press and hold the Test button for 5 seconds or so until the LED flashes once (Standard mode).
Do the same to switch back to Speed mode.

Edit: Oops. For the Universal Skyport receiver unit, instead of the Test button, press and hold the On/Off button.
