Got my first L and it's awesome. Very sharp and bokeh is nice.My only issue is it did not come with a tripod collar. I guess I will be picking up a knock off. My question is all the ones I see on amazon say 300mm f4l but none with the is. I see the 70-200 f4 and f4 is seem to use a different collars. so i just want to know if they are the same.
Thanks
Josh

Unless I'm mistaken the 300 F/4 IS should come with the tripod ring. Did you buy it second hand?

I have been looking at this lens for sometime myself. Everywhere I have looked sells it with the collar.
Going to sell a couple of primes to help fund it...

I got it used off craigslist. I was thinking I could get a knock off collar under $30.00. I just want to make sure it will fit.

Congrats. I had one and its a great lens. I only sold it because I also sold my 70-200 4IS for the 2.8II, and with a 1.4xTC, I'm about there. No regrets.

Does there even exist a non-IS version of the 300mm L? Well, probably, but it's been discontinued for quite some time. So it's not very likely the aftermarket ring wouldn't fit, because there's no need to distinguish the IS from the non-IS version, where as with the 70-200 the IS as well as the non-IS are very common and popular lenses. Hence the suffix of IS in the object description.
That's what I THINK though, don't take my word for it.;)

lbw! It's indeed a great lens. All the best with the search for the collar. But are you sure you need it? Most people buy it so that they can shoot birds without a tripod.

I have a black rapid strap, over the should sling that mounts to tripod collar or tripod mount on camera for caring around. It is not balanced mounted to the camera and I really wouldn't want to have the lens hang off the camera all day long. I use it to go hiking and carry for hours at a time. The strap is great on my sigma 150-500.
