430 EXII: Zoom Indictaor

Can anyone help please:

The Zoom indicator on my 430 EXII only shows 3 dashes like this: "---". There are never any numerics with "mm" units afterwards. Only ever 3 dashes...

I have tried all modes and ETTL settings. I have tried fiddling with the diffuser slider at the top; apparently these do give trouble.

Any ideas? Send back to B&H? Many thanks.

Is the flash head pointing directly forward? Can you manually zoom it? If yes to the first and no to the second then return it, unless someone else can think of something i've missed (semi likely I don't use Canon flashes much any more).

The flash head has to be pointing directly forwards. Is it?

A couple of things might be wrong with it
1. The wide angle diffuser did not fully go back
2. The zoom motor is not working
3. it's pointing upwards

Thanks to everyone who answered; my problem was simple enough. I had the unit pointing up to the ceiling in bounce mode. The zoom indicator does not function when pointing upwards, only when pointing directly forwards at zero degrees elevation.

You saved me a whole heap of embarrassing admin...I was about to return the unit to B&H from South Africa!

We know because we've probably all made the same mistake!
