Correct me if i'm wrong but this would still be coming from China if it's ordered from The Photo Gadget correct?

http://thephotogadget.com …h-canon-incl-diffuser-cap (external link)

Is it worth it to try and find a place that sells in the USA in case of issues and needing to send it back even if it costs a little more $$?

Yes photo gadget is in china from my understanding. I'm not sure of any us retailer that sell YN flashes yet. If you do find one please post up.

My question is would it be worth getting this in place of a yn468? I already have the 486 but the fact the 565 has extra power, reach, and the fact that it can sense APS-C sensor intreages me. I want to pick up a second flash for off camera shooting so I'm trying to decide if I should get the 565 and use it as my main on camera ttl flash as well as the second flash for off camera manual or should I get the 560 as the second flash for off camera manual and keep using the 468 for ETTL duty?

Buying from thephotogadget.com can safe a lot of money and they are really reliable. All sales have 1 year warranty as well. So don't worry, Grace does a really good job with her shop. Most US sellers on ebay want more than 330$!

I sold a yn468 to get the 565 as you suggested and I would actually say no, it's not worth it unless you're interested in the wireless TTL. The wireless TTL is the main thing this adds that makes it cost significantly more than the 468.

That's not to say it isn't a better flash all around -it definitely is-, but just that I'm not sure you'd find the price difference to be justifiable. If you're pushing the 468 to the limits you might notice the extra power but to me there wasn't a huge enough difference to tell in the kind of casual shooting I'm doing with.

Keep in mind it's also a little bigger footprint. Not hugely, but it's the size of a canon 580 instead of the size of a 430. This means a little more space in your bag

I don't remember suggesting that...sorry man

So probably just better to pick up a 560 as a second manual flash eh?

The YN565EX can sometimes be ordered through Amazon from a US supplier. The Amazon price was $180 plus shipping last time I checked so I ordered from ThePhotoGadget for $150 with shipping included. Mine took about two weeks shipping from China but arrived in good condition and appears to work as expected.

sorry, that wasn't worded very well there
I meant to say that I sold a 468 to get a 565 previously, the same thing you were suggesting that you might try now.
I had nobody's advice but my own when I decided to trade them.

You'll like the 565 for sure, but I just can't really justify the extra cost other than for wireless TTL... It's well worth it if you think you might use the wireless TTL setup down the road but it sounds like you're planning to stick with manual for the off camera stuff.

Oh ok. I was planning on keeping the 468 if I got the 565 but I decided to go with the 560 instead. I figure if I do decide that I need the extra power of the 565 over the 468 latter for on camera ETTL then I'll pick it up down the road. For now, for off camer manual, I figure the 560 is the better buy.

I have two and like them pretty well. The instructions (like all the imported products) are a little cryptic, but the units are pretty well built and reliable.

I just bought 5 of the 565EX and paid $150 each. Three are new in the box. One has not arrived yet, I ordered that unit on the 19th of last month off of ebay from seller Mekong. The open one has been used for about 300 flashes triggered infrared with a 580exII master and alternatively by an YN-ST-E2 in both cases it worked flawlessly in ETTL as well as camera top in ETTL. However, I am not interested in relying on infrared communications or on camera flash. I am integrating with Phottix Odins and this flash in not compatable with those smart triggers. I also understand these do not work as a master, or trigger well from a Canon ST-E2 controller.

I do love the lite. But, I will not be using mine. I just ordered a few more 580ex II speedlites for my system. Make sure the 565EX is compatable with you intended system before you buy it.

There is an interesting blog post with review and compatibility table in dutch (external link). As I expected the Odin is 100% compatible to Canon but not to other 3rd party flashes. All 3rd party manufacturers are only guaranteeing compatibility to Canon because it is just not possible. The eTTL protocoll is not an open standard which could be easily implemented, it is a re-engineered complicated thing. The YN-565EX did really implement the eTTL protocol quite well and is also compatible to the Pixel King.

As I feared, the YN565EX is not completely compatible with my Canon G12. When mounted on the G12, the YN565EX will not flash at all if the G12 is in Manual exposure mode. Otherwise, it seems to work OK. I'm not particularly surprised because the G12 is somewhat quirky with flash. As soon as I can document this shortcoming in my blog, I'll put a post in the G series forum.

The YN565EX does work with my Canon 7D both on and off-camera.

that's too bad to hear...
would be very very nice if they could put out a new version that has HSS and is fully compatible with all the triggers the 580exII can use, then we'd all be able to stop complaining
There's a huge cost difference between 5 of these and 5 580exII's so it would have been nice to be able to get these doing what you wanted them to.
