The YN-STE2 should change the settings off camera as well. Run it's the big bad amateur

And I've had a couple encounters where the flash flickers and makes this strange sound. I have not used it at full power, around -1~-2 stops? Has this happened to others? 5D Mark II . 35L . 85mm 1.8 . 135L . 17-40L

You wouldn't have caught the DOF button by accident and triggered the 'model light' on the 565 maybe? Chris

This must be my one gripe on the flash, that you cannot turn of the "model light"... "Light travels faster than sound. Which is why people some people appear bright, until you hear them speak..."

The Nissin has a small flash tube that provides fill when the main tube is tilted. Nissin has been around longer and has a more established record.

I guess only you can decide if any of this is important to you. I do own a Yongnuo flash and do like it lots. It is the YN-560 predecessor to the YN-565 and is a manual only flash. I was thinking if Nissin is worth the extra 110 bucks... And I have heard many horror stories about the dead capacitor on the older models. Do you think I should invest on a di866 for my first ever flash or just get a 565 and learn up before advancing on other flashes? I really want to try getting into strobing and stuff but I am not sure what should I get first D: help? Joel

I do not think you can go wrong with the YN 565 for a first flash. It will fit your needs at this point. I know that the Yongnuo flashes had some problems in the beginning but they seem to have stepped up the QC these days.

I won't comment on the Nissin since I haven't used it but I'd point out that if you're spending in that price range you definitely want to consider the canon 430ex II as well.
