PW = Pocket Wizards, Pocket Wizards will change the flash setting on the OCF. The YN-STE2 should change the settings off camera as well.

I've just started playing around with my YN-565. And I've had a couple encounters where the flash flickers and makes this strange sound. I have not used it at full power, around -1~-2 stops? Has this happened to others?

no, haven't seen that at all.... maybe give it another couple go-arounds with fresh batteries to see if it persists?

What do you mean by flickers? The only thing I can think would be noticing the TTL pre-flash (especially if you're on 2nd curtain sync) or you bumped it into multi mode? Is the exposure still right for the shot?

You wouldn't have caught the DOF button by accident and triggered the 'model light' on the 565 maybe?

This must be my one gripe on the flash, that you cannot turn of the "model light"...

Anyone here has any experience with a Nissin Di 866? I was thinking of getting a Di 866 tomorrow until I heard about this YN 565. Anyone has any idea how it compares?

The Nissin can be both a master and a slave. The Yongnuo can only be a slave. The Nissin has a small flash tube that provides fill when the main tube is tilted. Nissin has been around longer and has a more established record.
I guess only you can decide if any of this is important to you.
I do own a Yongnuo flash and do like it lots. It is the YN-560 predecessor to the YN-565 and is a manual only flash.

I was thinking if Nissin is worth the extra 110 bucks... And I have heard many horror stories about the dead capacitor on the older models. Do you think I should invest on a di866 for my first ever flash or just get a 565 and learn up before advancing on other flashes? I really want to try getting into strobing and stuff but I am not sure what should I get first D: help?

I do think that you first flash should have both eTTL and manual modes. Both of these flash have that. I do not think you can go wrong with the YN 565 for a first flash. It will fit your needs at this point. I know that the Yongnuo flashes had some problems in the beginning but they seem to have stepped up the QC these days.

I won't comment on the Nissin since I haven't used it but I'd point out that if you're spending in that price range you definitely want to consider the canon 430ex II as well.

If you don't need any of the wireless TTL settings, my honest suggestion for a first flash would be to save even more and just get the YN-468. It does TTL and works well for what it does. It doesn't have quite the power of the larger 5xx series flashes but for most work you really won't tell a difference.

I got my Yn 565 a few weeks ago. I have used it for 3 photo shoots. This flash is amazing. I will be ordering another one soon.
