My next lens purchase has come down to the 24-70mm vs 24-105mm

I've decided that my next lens purchase will come down to either the Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM or the Canon EF 24–70mm F/2.8L USM. I already own the 70-200mm 2.8 IS II, so I'm looking for an everyday lens. Weight is NOT a factor as I know the 24-70mm is a "brick". I just want the MOST bang for my buck and these are basically the 2 lenses I can afford.

Can I get away the F/4 if I shoot indoors? (example, parties, holidays, etc).

Since there have been a ton of rumors on a 24-70mm replacement, how much typically does the previous model fall in price?

Has anyone traded one in for the other, or what was the deciding factor when choosing one of these lenses.

Thank you so much.

Christian

I would have taken the f2.8, f4 can be a little slow for indoor use, even though it has IS it doesnt help much if your shooting someone that is moving around.

I see you have the 7D so you should also look at the canon 17-55 f2.8 IS.

24-70 is definitely the better choice over 24-105 for indoors parties, holidays, etc. However, 2.8 may not be enough to give you fast shutter speed indoors unless you increase your ISO way up. I have never used 7D so I can't evaluate its performance at high ISO.

I've owned both in the past. Both have distinct functions - 24-105 for mostly outdoors, landscapes, and what not, while 24-70 is for well-lit indoors. When the lighting is not so good, you need wider aperture than f/2.8.

I've shot indoors with my 24-105 many times, but to be honest, unless you have a flash, or are willing to do high iso's, then you would be better with alternatives. In my case, 1 stop is not good enough. 3 stops is better. so I got a 35L for indoors, and I love it. super sharp wide open, and a wide enough FL to be able to take group photos. 24L might even be better, but not as good as a walkaround for me since it's a little wide outdoors.
I chose the 24-105 over the 24-70 because the 24-70 is a tad dated, has no IS, and wide open at the extremes, it's not as sharp as I would like. outdoors when there's plenty of light, I am more than happy with F4. for the types of photos I take, mostly candids, portraits, landscapes, its more than fast enough. for other stuff, I take out the 70-200.
Price drop when the new one comes out... I really don't think it will drop much. I think that the new 24-70 will be priced much higher, most likely 1800$ if Nikon pricing is any indication, so that will be priced in a diff category and shouldn't hurt old 24-70 resale that much. but certain people will always want the best, and that will drive them to the new 24-70...

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I do need a general purpose lens for shooting indoors as well. I returned the 70-200 F/4 for this very reason with my zoom lens.

Agreed with above but if you want a good quaity prime that you can realy use wide open in low light you are looking at the 24 L or 35 L.

Get the 24-70. You don't have any fast primes and the f2.8 will come in handy for background blur with portraits and such. It doesn't need I.S. and those are merely long-standing rumors that a new version will be coming out. If it does and they add I.S., it'll undoubtedly go up in price by at least a few hundred dollars.... in which case I likely won't bother buying one.

Out at 105mm and 135mm I.S. is a little more useful, IMO. I just don't really need it at 70mm, especially since I started using the lens on cameras I tried to keep to ISO 800 and I now have cameras that I shoot at ISO 3200 and 6400 without too much concern.

I compared 24-70, 24-105 and the 28-135 you already have. Image quality isn't all that different between the three. If anything, the 24-105 has more optical vignetting at the wide end. Of course, it's a more durable build and better sealed than the 28-135... and a stop faster at the long end. But I don't know that it's worth 4X what I can get a good, lightly used 28-135 for locally off Craigslist.

The 24-70 is also better sealed (a key reason I got it, along with f2.8) and more durable "L" build quality, same as the 24-105.

All three lenses are fast focusing and close focusing. The I.S. on the 24-105 is a newer and more advanced version than on the 28-135. The "zoom creep" that's common on the 28-135 is a little irritating... Neither of the L's do that.

Yes, the 24-70 is big and fairly heavy, although not so big and heavy as your 70-200/2.8. Nearly half the 24-70's size is lens hood, though. It sorta makes sense once you see how it zooms.

My buddy has the 35L and loves it. However, it's just out of my price range and that lens also is rumored to be replaced soon. I just like having more of a focal range with my lenses.

Thank you for your post.

Would love that lens, however, God only knows when it will be released. And If I buy the 24-70mm right now I can sell it and have the cash by then when the new MK II comes out. I've got till the 19th till the rebate ends.

No problem. - you'll get the speed + decent background blur with the 24-70 wide open. F4.0 isn't all that great for background seperation.

And I would disregard any comments about waiting.
