After reading many reviews here and carefully examining many, many images posted in this forum taken with a variety of lenses, I pulled the trigger last night and ordered the 100-400L and the EF-S 17-55mm. I hope I'm satisfied with these two for now, because they put a big dent in the hardware budget! EOS R | EOS 7D

Well, they arrived, and I'm thrilled. The 100-400 is physically larger and heavier than I anticipated, but I was able to get some shots of mallards on the ice. Handholding it is a bit of a chore, and I think I'm gonna have to start working out: pumping glass. I haven't had time to play with the 17-55 yet, but this weekend I'm doing a shoot at a jazz/blues night at our church, and I hpe to see how it performs in low light. Color me happy.  EOS R | EOS 7D

Shot at 1/1250, f/5.6, ISO 400, +1 exposure compensation (to correct for the white ice). I'll get better in time, but I think I'm off to a good start. Is that an actual image or a crop of the image?

The uncropped image had a female in front of and to the left of the drake which was OOF. Then I did a little unsharp masking in CS5. Finally I hosted it on my home computer to avoid any of the changes in image appearance which I've read that the commercial hosting sites sometimes do. EOS R | EOS 7D

Anyways great lenses you got! Thanks for the feedback. As to the shot, I posted above: Shot at 1/1250, f/5.6, ISO 400, +1 exposure compensation (to correct for the white ice). I had just taken the lens out of the box, so I haven't yet had a chance to perform a microfocus adjustment. The focus mode was AI Servo AF, using Spot AF Point on the duck's chest. The PP was only unsharp masking in CS5, no adjustement of levels or curves. EOS R | EOS 7D
