In PS, you're asked if you want to replace a previously saved TIFF file, for example, with one you've done some more work on.

Is there a way to retrieve that earlier file, a Recyle Bin so to speak?

As far as I know, no -- it's up to you to save your project, if needed, make multiple copies. But, I'd prefer to do my layered work and minimize what I would need to do with a flattened image so when I'm at the point of "saving over" the project file it's the fully layered file and then little needs to be done with a flattened image -- sometimes I don't even need to save that version.

Thanks. Yes, I agree on the above process, but it was late last night and one should never edit when it's late.

In PS, you're asked if you want to replace a previously saved TIFF file, for example, with one you've done some more work on.

Only if you used "Save As" instead of "Save" and you kept the same file name. You've then permanently overwritten your original "master" file.

Is there a way to retrieve that earlier file, a Recyle Bin so to speak?

No, but you might want to adopt a naming convention when you save as, such as IMG_1234_5x7crop...

Or, work in layer groups which you can simply toggle on or off to view the original.

Or, safest practice is to MAKE A COPY FIRST, before editing a "master" file.
