Pretty useless, the lens element is recessed.

Aswell as the fact that I'm not overly keen on the whole screw-into-the-filter-thread idea of it too...hmm

I'm a huge fan of hoods....for the lenses that have it, I keep them on 24/7...but the front element is so far back that I doubt a hood would do much good in either keeping stuff from touching the lens or stray light from entering. I, personally, wouldn't bother.

I'm a big lens hood fan too.

And I dont have one for the 50/1.8

Its front element is so recessed and its hard to make the thing flare (even on purpose) I wouldnt bother from an optical POV, and as protection it fails somewhat I think too.

Second on this, you'll be paying 30% of the lens price. Unless flare is a major problem, don't bother.

Less than that really! :P But yeah, I wanted to be really weird and get all my lenses hoods and the same filter (Hoya Skylight Filters) but I'm just not keen on the whole idea of screwing it onto the filter thread thus possibly breaking it...seeming the lens isn't really built for brute force. But thanks for the advice guys!

On a related note, I just got this lens and didn't expect it to be so tiny. Mounted on a 50D I can barely put my left hand under it and I'm struggling to find a good balance to hold the camera properly.

Does the 1.8 have a thin piece that protrudes slightly when focused like the 1.4 does? I got a hood for my 1.4 mainly to protect that.

ebay cheap canon knock off with free delivery. It does help when shooting at night with strong light sources around.

I have one for my 1.4, but I'm compulsive about the hood/UV filter combo. I've had a few bumps that probably would have bruised the lens, and that was enough for me to be sold.

And likewise regarding the compulsiveness...I'm just that one step sadder by wanting them to be the same brand of filter or what not haha
