On a related note, I just got this lens and didn't expect it to be so tiny. Mounted on a 50D I can barely put my left hand under it and I'm struggling to find a good balance to hold the camera properly.

Had the same problem, sold my nifty fifty off after a months use and picked up the Sigma 50 f/1.4. Now I have drastic difference in balance and Manual Focusing.

For the OP, no it is a waste of money. Unless you are buying it to make the fifty look bigger I wouldn't get one. As people have mentioned it rarely flares and it isn't really that expensive so in case you shatter the front element it would just be cheaper to pick up another one. On another note I loved how little and easy it was to transport. Could bring it in the pocket whilst on a photowalk.

Hell the guy whom bought mine was asking why there was no filter included, I tried to tell him that if he wanted one of my filters he had to cough up another 50 bucks.

Yes with it mounted, but it looks like a regular photo, as the hood does not interfere or cause vig.

Ahh do you have any pics using it?

And likewise regarding the compulsiveness...I'm just that one step sadder by wanting them to be the same brand of filter or what not haha

Just got a 50 1.8 at work. Adorama has a hood for $10. It looks and feels good but it is kind of a pain to have to screw it on. The lens cap does not fit in it so you end up needing to take it off to store.

ebay canon knock off one's the lens cap fits and stays put. you screw on the bayonet mount and mount the filter or lens cap right on it. You leave the mount on the lens.

The lens basically has a built in hood, if you want to call it that. Like stated above, the front element is recessed quite a bit into the lens, so acts like a hood already.

Does the 1.8 have a thin piece that protrudes slightly when focused like the 1.4 does? I got a hood for my 1.4 mainly to protect that.

Yes the front of the 1.8 does stick out a bit, but a hood won't protect it because the hood has to be mounted to the front filter threads.

It is slightly recessed but not allot really, maybe 1/2 inch. And if you compare it to the 50 1.4 hood which is about 2.5 inches. The 50 1.8 recess does not count a whole lot for flare protection which is the main purpose of the hood.

If I was to buy a hood for the 50mm 1.8 Mk II, I would get the Canon ES-62 that needs the 62-L adapter, but I would also get a ET-62 because it is bigger and looks better too.

Here is what the OEM canon hood and adapter look like.

Some 3rd party hoods are labeled ES-62 but they are one piece and generally have two problems: (same with rubber hoods)

1) They can not be mounted reversed for storage on the lens.
2) They have no front filter threads to attach the lens cap. (you might still be able to put a lens cap in there anyway)

Most of the cheaper ebay ES-62 hoods are the one piece type. Make sure you get the better two piece design like the OEM Canon. here is one for $4.28 http://cgi.ebay.ca …ories&hash=item35adcbf79d (external link)

I have a hood and use it. It was a gift as was the lens. I use it, but it's a PITA to mount the hood IMO.
