I purchaced lightroom 3 student edition at the discounted rate. The rep told me this is the same as the edition I have been trialing for the last month. Is this true or is the discounted student edition a watered down edition?

I just completed a trial of both Lightroom 3 and PS CS5. I'm a student and was wondering the exact same thing. I hope someone has an answer.

student editions are generally the same as full price editions with the exception that they can not be upgraded and are valid during your schooling

Adobe student edition software is the exact same software as the retail package - what differs is that its both a special rate to legitimate students (which you have to prove before you can get it) and also with a few licence differences.

In the US I think the licence is actually the same - whilst in the European market the student edition licence is not valid for commercial use of the software - whilst the retail is (ie student edition can be used for home and private use, but not for professional commercial work)

I know that creative suite student edition didn't have watermark at the time while I was using it, they probably still don't and I don't see any reason why would be any different with lightroom..

As I recall, the major difference is in the license agreement -- student editions are not to be used for business, to make money, etc....

Wow, fast answers...I just want to tweak my photos in LR (because it's easy) for personal use. I do like the ocasional watermark though. I hope it has that feature. I also don't see how they would know when I was out of school and don't want it to expire. Thanks folks!!

Lightroom and CS5 work the same, so don't get confused by the "no watermark" statement -- that is referring to the fact that some software adds a watermark if it is a "freeware" or trial version. Adobe products don't.

A couple other points to clear up -- the "no commercial use" clause is not in the US version but is in some countries, so you want to make note of that being location-specific.

And, as to upgrades, you can in fact upgrade, but it costs the "normal" upgrade price, which just so happens to be about the same as it costs when using the student discount -- in other words you can't get a "student upgrade discount". But that's for a whole new version -- Adobe issues a "minor" upgrade about every three months for both Lightroom and CS5 and you should accept and install those upgrades or run the Help/Upgrades utility to update your installation.

I have student versions of both LR3 and CS5 (and have friends with non-student versions), and I can verify that there is no functional difference.

LR does do watermarks, but for better watermarks, you can use the LR/Mogrify plugin.

Hmm they've changed that recently then (last few months at least). Not that I'm going to complain at all :)

It sure is, indeed you can just use the registration code in the student edition to register the version you've already installed.
