Spring is coming and I want to try to photograph hummingbirds. Do you know of any place in NJ, preferably Central NJ, where I can surely find a hummingbird?

Thanks!

Just throw up a feeder in the backyard and you'll get plenty in your area.

Honestly, I have yet to see a hummingbird. :)

Might actually consider putting up a hummer feeder.

I would suggest putting up a feeder in an open area if you have it....don't hand it under a tree. Hummingbirds forage by sight and if it's hidden...well, probably no Hummingbirds coming to visit.

It may take some time to attract one or two but when they find a good food source they usually stick around and may even nest near or on your property. Replace and clean the feeder on a regular basis (I do this every 4 days whether it's full or not). I use a mild bleach solution and rinse the feeder really good and replace it with fresh sugar/water solution. 1 part sugar to 4 parts water...boil water, add sugar and disolve, cool and serve. ;)

I live in PA. All I do is put up a hummingbird feeder and they will come. It may take awhile, but they will find the feeder and once they find it, they will come back. Make sure you keep it clean. Ants are attracted to the feed.

When do you think is the best time to put up a feeder? Do I put it up once the the trees start growing leaves or do I wait till middle of April when everything is in bloom?

They say (don't ask who they are) that a hummingbird (not the same single bird, mind you) will investigate every square foot of land across the species' range each season.

Hang a feeder...if you hang it, they will come!

Mine has been up for two weeks now but no takers yet....that I know of. I live on the coast of Virginia and I usually see adult males move through the second or third week of March...I think these are the ones migrating North because I don't normally see a female until the end of March early April.

Here is a migration map for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

@Kechar - nice photo. Makes me want to really put up a hummer feeder in addition to my bird feeder.

@Duane - thanks for the map. Based on the 2009 & 2010 records, first sightings appear April so I guess I'll put up a feeder last week of March for the early arrivals.
