 Just buy it when it's on sale/refurbed/used and tell her how much money you saved by buying it then as opposed to later. Usually works for them, why not try turning the tables.*

*Disclaimer: It's never worked for me but you may as well give it a go.

Ha, I've tried that too... didn't work. My wife has gotten in the habit of using this anytime I ask about the cost of something. "Oh, but it was on sale!" - psshhhsshhh!!!! whatever. :p

How come nikon gear prices stays the same?!The depreciation of dollar doesn;t seems to affect them.. If the prices on the lenses would get the same I think more ppl would switch to nikon.
Canon would no longer have the advantage to be more affordable.
The worst part about this is that it affects my marriage.. My wife is not happy about this at all:)

Yes, it is simple. 2-3 years ago I could afford it, now I can't. That sucks and it's my thread so I'll whine if want to! :)

LOL. You go on!

You're right - photo gear is expensive anymore. I'm tired of lens prices going up, I'm tired of grocery prices going up and I'm tired of paying out the butt for gasoline. Photog has turned into a luxury that I mostly put on the back burner for buying anything. Used lens prices should not be damned near close to the price of new because they're USED! Even used car prices are going up because no one's buying brand new cars. Death, taxes and rising prices is a sure thing in life - sucks!

Just my $1.25 worth (adjusted for inflation).

Actually, truth be known, in a relative sense, photography gear is probably cheaper now than it was 15 or even five years ago.
To see proof of that you just need to see the explosion of digital SLR's in the last few years.
I remember when I'd be at a sporting event and rarely see L lenses (and Nikon equivqlent) in the crowd. Nowadays it's so common place, it just blows me away.
The only ones who used to have that kind of gear was working pros. Now it's everywhere.
This forum is testament to that - have a look at how many POTNers, who are not working pros have have top line gear for what to them is essentially a hobby.
I'm not saying it's cheap, but you get more for bang for your buck when compared to the mid to late 90's.

You have an 11-16 and 24-70. Are you trying to fill in the 8mm gap? Based on your comment about the mechanic never needing new tools, you probably dont NEED that lens. :D

I just looked at your site and your black and white shots are amazing! Are they HDR black and whites? (really off topic, I know)

Most are, but not all..I love HDR for B&W's

I bought the Tokina because I got it for $450 used off of CL..compare that to the 10-22 that I WANTED to get..no, I have no need for the canon anymore..just using the price increase as a point in the conversation..

I had plenty of mechanics (my dad for one) in my family, so I know about the cost of tools, the only time you need a new one is because it's a speciality piece, sockets & wrenches will last you forever if you buy the good stuff to begin with..and if they break..snap-on will replace it on the spot, no questions asked..try that with canon or nikon after the warranty is up...:D

I dont think its expensive at all. You could have a pretty professional setup for 15000. I know auto mechancis who have spent well over double that for all their tools.

I've got that much into boxes-- add 25 years of contents ;)

Depends--I quit chasing the latest uber MP body and overpriced software years ago.

But that lens collection and its value. ;)

The solution is to stop buying new.

The retailers are the only ones with a voice Canon will listen to.

I haven't been around or into photography for very long, but I agree with the OP. Not only have prices gone up, replacement lenses have gone waay up.

I'm in the process of buying my first place, and I've been forced to sell and downgrade most of what I had.

I'm grateful that there's a great active marketplace here, which allows me to sell all the stuff I've bought used for roughly the same price.

+1 :D

AND will provide all of the resources you need to participate in the CLP - even old P&S in the "Selling" posts for better prices than the bay.
