Somehow my camera is stuck on slideshow. I did not set it to that but it is there and the slides are buzzing by faster than white lightening. I am trying to get into the menu to change it but it will not let me?

Help! Any ideas?

Open the battery door and remove the battery. That should stop it if nothing else will. :-)

Hi Dana,

I did try that and then walked away from it for a spell. When I turned it back on it was still having a temper tantrum, though I was able to get into the menu to turn off the slide show.

What I am wondering is if there is some sort of default features such as holding down to toggle switch too long that may activate the slide show while viewing photos?

Still green when it comes to understanding the personality of this camera.

Thanks!

Oooops, New Girl On Bloc I meant.
Take the battery and the card out, then only put the battery back in. Maybe that might help. Otherwise, I would contact Canon immediately. Also, look on their site and in the book, they may have something about this in troubleshooting section.

Good luck and keep us posted, it could happened to someone else.

so this is the deal, as far as i can see. the "omni selector" seems to be at fault. whenever i am in preview mode the pictures go from one to the next in rapid succession. but this also happens when i am in the menu mode.

to explain: when i press the menu button and i try and go to a specific menu, i have no control over the omni selector and the menu's jump from one to the next. the camera has totally taken on a life of it's own.

i've not called canon yet, mostly because in my experience, they do not know anything and just tell you to send it in for repair. that could take weeks!

my first choice is to return it for an exchange to the camera store where i bought it, but they are on a holy day break until friday so i am not sure if they will. i've had it for three weeks.

so in the meantime, i'm hoping to get some answers and perhaps see if it's just a glitch that can be solved.

ideas my forum friends?

Could be risky, sometimes fruitful, always interesting - you could update the firmware. Canon has an update for the G3 on their web site. It may not be designed to fix your issue, but if the problem is related to firmware (and it could well be) then that might fix you up.

I have seen posts from folks who have flashed the new firmware and haven't had any problems.

Just a thought.

Dana

P.S. Nilologist - I'm fine (luckily) - it's new girl on the block who has the permanent slide show feature. :-)

I think the cause of your problem is not software but hardware. The omniselector consists of 4 microswitches and in my opinion one of them, the right or the left, is stuck and stays connected.

Yes - re-reading the post makes me think you are correct. Maybe dunk the camera in water to clean the contacts? :-) (KIDDING!)

Thanks Dana and Gerard.

I too feel that it is a hardware problem. I am wondering if there is a way to unstick the omni selector. I've been playing with it a bit, but find myself getting angry at it, which is weird, since i'm generally of a calm nature. electronics can do that to me?

going to dunk it in some water now dana...
