7D weatherproofing

I am going to move up to a 7D from my 50D, weatherproofing being one of the major reasons. Will also be buying a grip and wondering what that does to the sealing out of water/dust? Have used non-canon grips on my other cameras, but weather sealing was not a concern. Do I need o buy the Canon grip to maintaain integrity of the seal? Anybody have a non Canon grip for a 7D? Is it sealed around the battery door opening?

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but the Canon grip maintains the weather sealing. It is also made of the same magnesium alloy as the body. I doubt third party grips will do that.

not 100% sure but but 50D grip didn't have sealing. I can't speak for my 5DII cuz its not gripped but I dont think there is sealing on any of them.
EDIT: you could always put a strip of silicone as a seal

Holding the BG-E7 on my hands right now I can see NO SEALING on it at all. And it's made of a good quality plastic, not metal.
You can probably put that silicone on it as well, but I seriously doubt it would keep the level of weather sealing of the 7D.
The battery door on the grip is sealed, though... there's a small rubber/plastic ring going all over it. Not sure about the buttons.

Alex, just like the camera body, the grip's outer shell is plastic but it's the frame underneath that's magnesium.

From what I've heard the 7D grip should maintain the same level of weather sealing as the body, but you saying there's nothing around the camera's battery door area on the grip is interesting...

Are you sure? It feels very 'magnesiumy' to me.

and just to clarify the "7D weatherproofing" ... its weather sealing is resistant not weatherproofing, meaning the camera isn't fully sealed (like the 1D bodies) to prevent moisture from entering the body.

if you really need it to be sealed you're best bet is to improvise with standard equipment readily available.

Off my head I'd think you could put a layer of gaffer tape around the joints or, in extreme situations, you could apply a layer of hot glue around the joints.

The only sealing that I have ever seen on the canon grips are around the battery doors. There is an obvious gap, and a large one, between the grip and body. Some enterprising individuals have used thin weather sealing tape and lined it around the perimeter of the grip so that it compresses against the body as they tighten the grip. Canon may have changed that in the last year or so, I don't know.

I would be wary of adding more sealing because the Canon grips have known to seize up and require surgery to remove if you overtighten them.

Can someone shed some light on how weatherproof a lens is. Specifically the 15-85? Taking my 7d with me during skiing...

Snow isn't wet until it melts. With resonable care, the lens/camera survives snow without issues.

My 40D survived this event (right arrow for more images), but then I used the EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM and the EF 70-200 mm f/4L IS USM lenses, which are among the better from a weather resistance point of view.

There is no seal between grip and camera. Only the battery doors are sealed, but when using the grip, the camera's battery door is removed.

If you need sealing then only a 1-series will do. They are truly sealed and rated as such.

Also, the D300/700 are not fully sealed like the D3 is, they are just higher then the D7000 sealing and like canon, where they do none, resistant, sealed.

well, I just orderd my 7Dbody with the Canon grip, probably wasted a 100 bucks. Wonder why the seal was not put on camera so when you removed the door and used a Canon grip you would still be sealed? As ar as it not being as water proof as the Pro models, I looked through the threads and it looks like in real world testing it does very well.

I don't believe there is weather sealing on grips. However, I think it isn't super hard to do a little DIY weather sealing with some foam or what not.
