I recently got a 1DsII which replaced my 30D. I carried the 30D in a Lowepro Primus Backpack which was a great bag. I loved the fact that I could access the camera and lenses without taking off the pack. Unfortunately, the 1Ds is too big for the side access on the Primus and I had to let it go. My old bag which I’ve been using in the interim is a Crumpler December Quarter which is the predecessor to the 7 Million Dollar bag. The 1Ds and my other lenses pretty much fill it up, but I can get away with it. The problem I have with that style of bag is comfort and security. I do a fair amount of hiking and the weight displacement on this bag is less than ideal. Also, I will be going on a trip to DC in a few months and am nervous about how easy it is to access the bag. If I carry the bag in it’s most comfortable position with the strap on my opposite shoulder and the bag against my back anyone could open the flap with relative ease and grab something before I could react. Lastly, the Crumpler has no tripod accommodation.

One major gripe with backpacks in general is accessing the gear is generally a take it off, set it down, unzip process. That was one reason I loved the side access of the Primus so much. However, on the plus side backpacks provide a great way to disperse the weight of the gear making a long hike bearable.

Another nicety would be the ability to carry additional items such as clothing layers, hydration pack, tripod, etc.

At present my equipment includes the 1Ds, 16-35, 24-105 and 70-200. For the trip I might rent a 85L. Accessories include about 8 filters, flash, and a bunch of small crap like wireless remotes, etc.

Is there a utopian bag out there? I haven't looked at the bag market for a while and am not sure what's out there?

I have used a Lowepro Rover AW II backback for a couple years and love it! Not sure on the fit of your 1Ds, but I can carry my 40d with l plate on and all the lenses in my signature except the 150-500. Lots of room in the daypack section for other travel goodies, etc too.

Since I have gotten my Sigma 150-500, the need for a bigger bag arrived and I just got a Lowepro Nature Trekker AW II yesterday! Wow, this thing holds it all, if I want or need too! Both backpacks have tripod moounts. and I plan on picking up a camelbak or bottle bag to strap on since I gave up non-photo storage going to the bigger backpack. the straps on this thing are awesome and can be adjusted to fit me @ 6'2" to carry the weight on my hips instead of my shoulders. I just arranged and loaded it last night and am yet to go for a hike with it, but am sure it will be a a great bag!

Oh, I hear this bag has been discontinued, so some close-out deals might be around.... I found mine on eBay, new w/ tags for $120.00 shipped! Beats the heck out of $229.00! I kinda feel bad for the guy trying to sell a used one, but know I will own this one for many years to come.

If you are hiking, or generally active check out the F-Stop range. Don't know about access, but plenty of room and outstanding reviews from everyone on here. Also stealth photo packs as they look like any other hiking/trek pack.

Good luck with your search

you mention that you like the ability to get your camera without taking a backpack off. Just wanted to say you could rule out the tamrac aero 85 speed pack. I got it for this feature and I love it for my 5D. But theres no way a 1D would fit through the quick access opening.

I'm using Lowepro 300aw trekker. It fits my camera, 5 lenses (biggest one is 50-500mm), spot for laptop, waist pouch, and can carry a bladder for water. And can carry tripod/monopod. It's heavy on my back, but the weight sits evenly. Well worth it. I like it.

Thanks Crystal. The Trekker looks pretty nice, though it looks like I'd be having to take everything off for access. I can't tell from the pics and description but is there anyplace for additional clothing?
