Canon 5D2 with 580 II. Flash tilted 45 degrees up ,turned 90 degrees to the left (or right - I can't remember) and bounced off a white ceiling. No diffuser. Camera on manual - flash on TTL.

Das nice. Rarely is the background nicer than the main subject. Great bouncing.

Thanks. I was helping a friend shoot his first wedding. After getting key shots I started goofing around turning the flash head in all types of angles and directions. I was surprised by the results and I learned something that night. All the articles and tutorials written by the flash masters that I have been devouring were not kidding.

Great suggestions here as well. I particularly like the 45 degree angle and reversing the head 180. I always thought you needed a wall behind you as well. Something I will try next time that opportunity comes my way.

Getting HARSH shadows behind the people im using fill flash on. Not having the subject and background with equal looking light. Back ground to dark, front to light or vice versa. to noticable pinlights in the eyes to get the picture bright enough. All of it lol and i dont want to carry my umbrella and stand around with me on outdoor photo shoots it i can help it. lighting simply eludes me

My first shots with my Canon EOS 60D and Nissin speedlite flash with diffuser bounced off the ceiling in a home studio set up. I used my Tamron f2.8 28-75mm lens which the focus and sharpness is excellent. The aperture was set at f2.8 and focus was on the eyes so the image was blurred enough. The final processing was done in Photoshop CS5 to add effects, border and drop shadow.

Single manual on camera flash (430ez - excellent flashes for quick manual adjustments) and a black foamy thing, bounced behind and left if I remember correctly...

So are they lined up against a wall or something that you are getting these shadows. Sounds like you flash output is pretty high. To get your background even with subject you may want to consider a light meter. If your background is too dark then turn your flash off and meter it to taste. Turn the flash on and start with FEC at about -1. No umbrella then see if you can at least get the flash higher off your camera. Bracket maybe.

Here a few. Aperture Priority, HSS enabled, TTL and ISO 400. Maybe try a few of these settings.

Shutter 1/800, F4.5, Exposure compensation 0, FEC -2/3. 7D and 70-200 lens - no bracket used.

Shutter 1/640, F7.1, Exposure compensation -1 1/3, FEC -2/3. 5D and 24-105 lens - bracket used.

hmmmm... i'm interested to know what your photo's look like. Could you maybe post an example? I don't think i've ever had a problem like such, but then again i'm no expert not have I shot enough with flash to run into the same issue.
When I use fill flash out doors, I use manual mode and dial in the power I think is appropriate. I dial in just enough power to minimize the harsh shadows on my subject.
