Since you mention Exposure Compensation you must be in TV or AV. I would get your camera in Manual mode and start with the SS of 1/160 and an Aperture of F5.6. You do not mention what ISO you are using but if you are overexposing you need it as low as it goes. You shutter speed is going to control how much ambient you capture from the room lights. The aperture is going to control the flash light. If you are still overexposing, close the aperture down to F8 or more. Underexposing open up to F4 or more.
