At $1500 and only 300Ws, not that interesting:

I bought two of the Genesis 300Bs. Still have one and its for sale :-)

I find it hard to imagine how Photoflex can expect to sell many of their units given the price disparity.
Sure the Genesis only does a couple hundred pops per battery, but the extra batteries are only $90.
And It has a switch to make it AC compatible. Also, when the switch is to DC the modeling light is taken out of the circuit.

Best deal at the moment is an Einstein and VML.

I do wish PCB would provide a port on the side to just plug the battery into the Einstein without having to go through the inverter.

Dave, have you thought about opening an Einstein to see how hard it would be to make a battery direct connection?

It would almost be worth the $500 cost of an Einstein to see how a direct VML battery connection could be made.

That Bad? I've been making due with a set of JTL mobilight 301's for location stuff. The lights aren't great... but the battery system has a bad reputation and i can clearly see that one of my batteries is better than the other in terms of no of pops per charge... I figured the 300b's would be a trade up... now i've been thinking that just adding the VML to the mobilights might be the way to go. (for me... because i already have the lights)

(The 301's work fine with our work Vagabond II)

I wonder why they did that. (Backwards compatibility?) Are there any electrical advantages to an inverter type setup as opposed to just a DC battery/turbo battery system? (Faster charge, more efficient?)

The inverter is just adding an extra drain on the battery.
However, given the number of pops that one can get from a fully charged VML with an Einstein at full power it may be that the work to make it DC direct is not worth it. And it does mean they can't be used with anything else.

That is what makes the VML so nice. It will power anything.

A friend borrowed a VML and Einstein for a shoot in New Orleans. On the drive back they used the VML to charge their mobile phones in the car.

Just imagine what it would do to extend the useful life of an iPAD on a long international flight. :-)

Wonder if the USB connection improves things for iPAD use?

I still want to know what power level will deliver 7fps even though at this price I'd go with a Quadra instead.

Oh the horror! After waiting more than a year to get my Einsteins, David, just the thought of performing exploratory surgery on one makes my blood run cold.

It's a good thought, though. I do have a 400Ws studio strobe here that runs DIRECTLY off ANY 12v source; no inverter of any kind required. It can even be plugged into a car's cigarette lighter. Connect the (+) and (-) leads to a 12v NiMH, SLA, or other technology battery and you're in business. It would be wonderful if the Einsteins had this capability.
