Hi I will be buying a 1D Mark IV along with Sigma 70-200 2.8f lense and Sigma 15mm 2.8 lense.

I will be doing a documentary on Icelandic nature/music

here are the costs:

Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG II HSM (Canon) £ 460
Sigma 15mm F2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye £456
Canon EoS 1D Mark IV £3000

What you guys think?! 4000 is my budget... i mostly do concert shoot but fancy getting in to wedding photography... I know Mark II is great as full frame but again i can take few steps back to get more wide angle isnt it :)?

It would be good to know what is your experience if you used these equipment before.

my current body is a 400D and ive been shooting for 4/5 years now:

Many Thanks
Asif

May not be completely relevant, because of the different brand, but I had the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 II EX DG APO HSM (that's a mouthful!) in Pentax mount, and it was a great lens. Sharp, with lovely colors. Focus speed was so-so, but I suspect the camera, not the lens. Hope this helps.

Welcome to POTN ASif. It seems you've made a good start so all the best with the acquisition of your new gear, the documentary and getting into wedding photography.

Big gap in focal lengths right in the normal range if you don't have any other lenses. What are you using on your 400D? This combination might be OK for Iceland but for weddings you'll want to fill the middle with something fast.

I wouldnt get the fisheye to begin with, maybe a 17-55 2.8 or similar to start and then later get the fisheye, thats just me though.

There seems to be a bot of a mismatch in body vs glass in the budget.

A 7D will do most of the stuff that the 1D4 will do at about £1800 less. You could buy some nice glass with that which would make a bigger difference to the final images than the body.

Why do you need the 1D4?

Very lucky to have a lot of nice toys :)

Thank you all for your replies :)
At the moment I do have ….
Sigma 28-70 2.8f lens
Canon 50mm f1.8 standard lens

My main purpose at the moment is Concert photography. >> http://www.soundshock.com/ (external link)
i have a little company as a webzine but i want to go even further so the filming thing came in my mind and i do video editing so it will be fun i guess.

I would love to get the L lenses! but at the end of the day i can either have a good camera like 1D or may be 2x L lens and not a 1D because I have 4k as budget... i am thinking to go for the body as night shooting is really hard with all the manual focus and so on specially in gigs time is very limited to shoot in really bad low light!!! With a body like Mark IV I will be able to use the focusing advantage to take the shot without manually adjusting the focusing.

I would LOVE to get some L lenses but I guess I have to wait till I get some more money to invest on the gear. For now Sigma will do fine for me I guess and after editing the images it might not look too different then L lens images.
I am not the best photographers :) but this is what I pulled out from a 400D with a Sigma 28-70 2.8f lense so I am sure with the Mark IV and other lenses like sigma it will do far better as a better camera will be used :)

And coming back to Wedding photography... what are the ideal lenses to have? focal length wise?

and reason for going for a fisheye is because i thought as i dont have a full frame so a soft fisheye will give me the wide angle view that i will lose with MarkIV... ?! bad idea you guys reckon ? :S

feel free to speak you mind i wont be offended lol

thanks for taking the time to write something :)

cheers
A

17-55 will not fit the 1D Mark IV. It's a EF-s lens.

I've heard the 1D4 is iffy in low light for focusing vs 1D3?

Do you need the lens weathersealed? The sigma isnt - and the non IS canons arnt either.

I still think some good glass would be money better spent than the 1D4. A 7D in the UK is about £1150 and a 1D4 is approx £3450 so exactly triple the price. I imagine the difference in price will be similar wherever you are

The 7D is an absolutely fantastic camera and probably does 90% of things that the 1D4 does. I never considered the 1D4 until I had a good selection of glass

I would really recommend spending more of your money on lenses than the body. You could have the most amazing camera in the world but you will never get a good picture if the lens isn't presenting a sharp image to the sensor. The body is probably the least important part of capturing the image.

The photographer is most important, then the lens and last the camera

Despite the fact that I am a 1D4 user I agree with the above comments - the glass is more important! I suggest you trade the Sigma 70-200 against a Canon 70-200 f2.8 is Mk2, get a 7d and then look at what else you need!
If your budget could be stretched then the 1D4 (though not perfect) is IMHO the best all round camera available, but it's very expensive and I believe glass is a better investment.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
