I was meant to get a new Kata rucksack, but I"unfortunately" became hooked on getting a decent Speedlite instead.

I fell in love with the Canon Speedlite 430EX II, is it a great first manual speedlite? :)
The plan is in addition to the 430EX II, to buy this set:

And a pair of Cactus triggers, but they don't work with E-TTL do they? How necessary is it for a total newcommer to the Strobist world to be able to use E-TTL? And can the Cactus triggers even get installed on my compact kit?

Most of the pictures will take place outdoors, if that makes any difference.

Is there any good videos that explain very basic things in strobism? The vast majority of all the things I know about cameras is "learn by doing", but it surely would be nice if I could get good at controlling the light quickly. :)

Those triggers do not work with ETTL. But learning manual flash is so simple and honestly better for most applications when using off camera flash you might not even miss ETTL. The 430exII is a good beginner flash, and retains ETTL for on camera use. Its a bit underpowered if you want to use it outside during the day, but then again most speedlites are. The link below is to some videos you might find useful.

Okay, I'll learn to use the manual flash quickly I hope :) .

I've been looking around on pictures from other strobist and I'm very impressed with their work. But now I have my doubts, can I even get some decent shots with a single 430EX II and an umbrella? Seeing the other guys setup, using multiple speedlites, softboxes and so on made me doubt it.

Could anyone please show me some work done with a single speedlite and a umbrella?
