I've actually traveled to Concord on race weekend and had no issues... ya just gotta be a quick study of the out of the way routes! ;)

But were you attending the race or just trying to get across town?

To chime in if I may : I typically go to the All-Star Race each year, I can't remember a time where I got out of the parking lot in under an hour! And that is just out onto the street, not even to I-85 yet! Another 20 to I-85 at least, and of course everyone behind the wheel thinks they are on the race track after watching action...

Lake Norman is a nice area. Mike lived there for a number of years before moving to Concord.

Thanks, we'll stick with Lake Norman. I'm more into winged critters than those that rely on wheels to get around. Saw a tempting 1.1 acre place there right on the water and across from the park.

Actually this was one race I didn't go to... but did have a kid free weekend so I went to Concord! LOL I have learned my way around enough to bypass the traffic....

I can get out and to my SO's house in under 25 min... His house is really only about 15 min from the track...so if you know the back roads... it can totally be done! LOL Though I haven't specifically been to the All-Star Race.

Lake Norman is a bit more peaceful! LOL I wasn't in touch with Mike when he lived there but we still have friends who live in that area.

I'd love to know some of those back roads! Don't spend a lot of time up that way, just for the mall and the occasional race...would be nice to have a faster route for sure!

I always take Mallard Creek Road to Ridge Road, then Prosperity Church to Eastfield Road, over to Poplar Tent and then up to NC-73...Concord - Davidson Highway. This usually puts you so far ahead of the heavy traffic that it is smooth sailing the rest of the way. I follow 73 all the way to NC-27 through Lincolnton and over to NC-18 north to Morganton.....hop on 40 and cruise.

But he's going toward Kings Mountain so needs to get that direction. I don't usually have to go that direction, but do know from other trips during 4th of July in Harrisburg that there are back routes away from the track and that area, I just haven't driven them enough to be able to give directions.

But you can hop off 73 at I-77 and take that south to 85 and on to Kings Mountain. It might be a bit longer, but the time saved would probably make up for that.

Thanks guys for the directions, I did just take a look on Google Maps and I realized there are so many ways to get outta there, never really tried an alternate route for the sake of getting home without getting lost! Hard to navigate new routes at night.

Looks like the fastest would be like you are saying Dan, Mallard Creek->Ridge->Prosperity->Eastfield, but left off Eastfield to Old Statesville then onto 485 and home free! Maps puts it at 1 mile longer than the normal travel route. Thanks! I will have to try that when the race comes to town...

The way things are going at this time, it looks like I won't be able to go. The baby will certainly keep me busy.

Sorry no thought... right now I'm just trying to figure out my next steps...

Since I mentioned it here earlier... I will mention it again... I found out yesterday that the grant funding that funds my position ends June 30, 2011.

Absolutely absurd for funding to go away for those types of things!
