Here's a straight out of the camera dusk/night shot with the 18-55 (with tripod)

Flare is one important thing to consider for things like cityscapes.

I definitely agree with other posters, that the 50/1.8 would be a welcome addition to your kit.

The best lens for shooting at night is a tripod and a cable release.

Night shooting is more about cranking up your aperture (f9, f11, etc), and most lenses will be pretty clear by this time. Work with your kit lens for now and use a decent tripod along with with 10s shutter timer on your camera, and you should be good. If you decide you want to shoot this style more, then I would suggest upgrading your tripod, getting a remote shutter release (so that you do not have to wait 10s everytime mostly), and maybe a better quality ultra wide. I like night shooting too and found that I preferred the wide angles for this style of shooting.

Hope this helps and best of luck...

sounds like you are describing cityscape night shots, where as if you are looking for such shots of the sky at night or stars or even maybe long distance objects, you will want a more (wide-open) aperture meaning a lower number rather than your suggested f/9 or f/11. I recommend a lens that can manage a 2.8 aperture at least.
The reason you can go so low an aperture without blury or "bokeh" results (blury circles in the backround of unfocused areas) is because when shooting ultra wide, focusing doesn't affect your depth of field nearly as much as a standard zoom lens.

Here is an example:

Taken with a Canon 7D, 25 second exposure,12mm, f/4 (2.8 or lower would have shown more stars and brought out the milky way more)
