This one is rated "excellent" overall condition, bore rated as "very good plus", and all original stamped matching numbers, with full accessories. I have owned 9 months. It is 74 years old, it may have not been shot in over 50 years, and even with decades old ammo, it shoots crazy straight. I really enjoyed this rifle; in spite of the bruise it gave me on my right shoulder. As I was firing it, I found myself wondering where this rifle has seen combat, perhaps in winter 1942 in Stalingrad, or the push to the Eastern Front in 43-44, or the march in 45. It helped to remind me, that the 'greatest generation' around the world, served together, and sacrificed to defeat the evil in the hearts of the leaders of the axis powers. I was originally looking for one to take apart and make into a modern sniper rifle , cut the barrel, re- crown the barrel, thread the barrel for a break / suppressor, replace the entire trigger package, and put into modern sniper stock. This one is to nice to do that to. It had been in a private collection for a long time. A beautiful rifle. But the stock was obviously refinished. Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.

Either way, thanks again....I was fortunate to find it. I enjoy shooting it at the range, and shooting it with my 7D. GeoffSFAs10 wrote in post #17931710 Doesnt have to be. I know mine has original finish and its about that shinny. My bad then. I was going not only by the sheen of the finish but also by the color of the stock, it looks a bit too red, almost all Soviet MN's that I've handled had brown (medium or lighter yellowish) finish. The one in the photo looks almost like cherry varnish. But I am by no means an expert. I was also just informed by a much more knowledgeable friend that in the 1950s just as the Soviet Army was switching to the more modern weapons, millions of Mosins were put into "deep conservation" status which among other things involved covering the stock with a layer of shellac (without any re-finishing of the wood) and the color of that shellac was likely not standardized. It is amazing how many people I meet that think rifles are lasers they just shoot straight forever. I had a similar zero with my .300 it calculated to dead on at around 290 and 4 inches low at 400. So muzzle to 400 aiming center mass I was somewhere in a paper plate with a 180 gr Barnes X. After 400 yards it started dropping like a rock, at 600 was something like -36 inches. That yag is incredibly powerful. Almost double what I have used. I've shot to a mile (1760 yards) with my .308 win. (175 SMK's over 43.? grains of XBR) That's way beyond the range of that rifle / load. But I had fun. I was hitting all around the target (a 24" x 24" steel hanger), but never hit it. I had to use every bit of elevation of my vortex Razor, plus hold 6 mils. I think it was like 34 total mils of elevation. And that's with a 20 MOA base. It was basically artillery at that distance. Even the slightest change in wind at that range would throw the round wayyy off course, and that fact that it's not even stable at that distance anymore. Like I said, it was fun trying. Canon Stuff
