If it's not raining a stroll from Westminster station, over Westminster bridge and then up south bank as far as you wish (maybe crossing back over the millennium bridge after taking the classic bridge/St Pauls shot) is a very nice walk. Be sure to take a tripod though to whack the tourist out of the way by the London eye.

If it's raining maybe hit a museum?

Even though the spot is touristy, the pigeons in Trafalgar Square are great – I have never seen that many pigeons in one place in my life. A good photographer could make a lot of that. The fountain statuary there is terrific, as well, although you won't have much "flowing water" w/o that tripod! There is a lot of "regal" detailing throughout the town (crowns and crests on everything) so that could be a field day if you're into details.

Also a huge fan of the Borough Market, which is a permanent, ancient outdoor/indoor farmer's market. Incredible variety of produce, meats, fish and unusual things like boar sausage that make for good shots out of the ordinary.

Off topic: cask-conditioned ales are the way to go; Bombardier was my favorite go-to when I was there in Feb.

I was born and bred in London, but now live in Canada. My London goes way beyond the postcard things to shoot and see. Since you only have one day, it's kind of hard to get a lot done, but I'll make some suggestions:

1. Hyde Park

2. London eye with the Dalli exhibition statue in the same pic, just across the road from parliament

3. Tower bridge, the thames and the city hall glass building

4. trafalgar square, piccadily circus

5. stand in the middle of oxford street/regent street and shoot the crowd and buses

Oh.....say hello to everyone for me ;)

I also think so.

Did you walk along the South Bank? Usually lots of interesting stuff there. If you are going again Borough Market is close by (just next to Southwark Cathedral) and very interesting. Took this image of a guy doing "Street" sketching (he hasn't even discovered film yet, let alone Digital).

For a couple of hour walk around I recommend.....
Borough Market, Southbank, outside the Tate Modern/Shakespeare's Globe, Millenium Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Strand/Inns of Court (weekdays only - http://www.time.com …6_1846948_1846891,00.html (external link)), Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square. Tower of London and Tower Bridge are good value.

Further afield South Kensington (Museums and Royal Albert Hall), Buckingham Palace and (further North) St Pancras Station (inside is very cool) and Camden Town.

Definitely go to St Paul's; that building is an experience, in and of itself. It's positively amazing. Tower Bridge and the Tower, in general are interesting. The chicken wire managerie at the Tower is pretty impressive.

Trafalgar Square only had about 5 pigeons, total, in it when we were over there; I was a little bummed...

Night shots, down along the Thames can be kinda fun; especially with the Eye down there.

If you get hungry while out and about, don't hesitate to swing in to the local Pret a Manger; they make some terrific, fresh sandwiches and stuff to grab on the go. They're EVERYWHERE, too; so not hard to find a quick lunch.
