Anything I should know about a "Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Canon"

Well just as the title says I'm looking at a local sale of a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for Canon and was wondering if there is anything I should be looking for. Do these lenses have any issues that I need to look for or ask about?

How do they compare to the 24-70L from Canon?

I would mostly use the lens for taking photos of my baby daughter and thought this might be a nice replacement for my kit lens.

Great lens and a good value. I have not heard of any issues with it.

I've never used the 24-70L but all the reviews I read prior to purchasing my Tamron 28-75 said the two were equivalent. Having said that, I love my Tamron! It's tack sharp, well built, fast, and quiet. I've never had single problem with it. It's a great walk about lens and should be quite the improvement over your kit lens..

I like mine and have never had a problem with it. The focal length is great for kid photography, and it produces super-sharp results. I think you'll enjoy it.

Using it on a crop the differences are somewhat marginal. I found the Canon to be sharper throughout the frame, have better AF and more contrast especially wide open. On FF the corner sharpness was more pronounced and the Canon seemed to focus even faster.

I had one for about a year and from my experience:

Negatives

1.) Had to be stopped down to f/3.5 before sharpness was most apparent
2.) Focus was rather slow and has a tendency to hunt and miss focus in low light
3.) Cheaply built but for the price its about what you'd expect

Positives

1.) Really nice IQ once the lens was stopped down starting at f/3.5
2.) Very lite weight
3.) Multiple year warranty
4.) Affordable
5.) Comes with Lens Hood

Well I went ahead and picked it up yesterday, I have not had a chance to play with it much yet.

Congrats on new lens!
I went for it for exactly same reason and it is very sharp at 2.8 for kids portraits.

First couple of months I struggle to get distance objects at focus under AF. It was also OOF at closer objects more often compare to kit lens. Now it is better. Don't know why.

For the price of the brick I have this lens and 70-200 F4 L which is perfect lens for kids photos as well.

I just got one and find it pretty sharp to 65 or 70mm at 2.8. After that 65-70 point, it seems to be a bit softer unless stopped down. Have yet to confirm that with more testing.

Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with it.

Oh, and that's on FF. Haven't tested it enough with the cropper to comment.

Copy variation seems to be the plague of this lens. The first copy I had was terrible, the second one was so sharp I ended up selling my 24-70. The size and weight are about half of what the Canon is.

I was lucky when I bought mine used, since it was a sharp copy. Now I sorta regret selling it.

Same here. I guess I got a good copy right off the bat because it is sharp all the way through, even wide open. I'll never sell mine!!

I had it before I went with the 24-70L 2.8, I enjoyed it, but in low light focus was horrible

So, I am looking for this lens also...With the copy variation issues should I buy new in order to have the chance to return if not acceptable. Also, this may seem like a dumb question but, how do you know you have a bad copy? Will it just be soft despite your best efforts?
