...folks who don't give a cr*p about color. (95% of rebel owners) (you know the pop up flash usin', green box mode engagin', kit lens does it all types)...
...don't want to understand what white balance is, but since they just spent $500 on a camera (GASP) the manufacturer at least tries to give them a good picture.

Wow, that is some rant. One can only assume your girlfriend must have run off with one o' them Rebel totin' morons, eh?

So true though. It's certainly possible to use rebels to yield professional grade images. No one especially the OP should take to much offense at what i said. People either care about their pictures or they don't. Clearly the OP is interested in improving her game. Everyone can improve their game.

What i posted is in fact what i think of auto white balance.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON"T HAVE A LIGHT METER AND YOU STILL WANT TO MAKE INTELLIGENT EXPOSURE DECISIONS.

Well I think we're answering two different questions here for one thing. If you're talking about actually using a photo shot with auto WB, I totally agree that it's stupid.
On the other hand though, auto WB does just fine in many situations for getting a realistic color onto the lcd for shot review and then I plan to change it in post anyway. It all depends what I'm shooting and how often the light changes, auto is often the quickest so I don't have to change back and forth in the settings.

I only shoot in RAW and when possible include a grey card in the first of a series of shots as a reference for later when processing. It's a method that is quick, simple and works.

No offense taken here. I gave up my Rebel ages ago.

Seriously, I do appreciate all the advice. My goal is to improve, not learn lazy habits.

Just a side point, grey-cards and custom WB are only going to get you to "close" to accurate WB / color representation. In a lot of cases, accurate WB / color is not necessarily what looks the best. Even though you shoot for accurate representation, you may have to end up changing it all anyway in post.
