I'm off to San diego next week, and in the hopes of capturing some of the amazing coastal images i've seen, I purchased my first circular polarizer filter. I will be taking both my canon 10-22mm and 24-70L. In the spirt of traveling light, my question is wether or, not I require both lens hoods with a cpl?

Thanks

It's going to be hard to turn your polarizer with a hood

It is easy to use the hood and filter on 10-22 at the same time but the circular polarizer on a UWA is of very limited use. at least for skies.

On 24-70 you would have to take the hood off when rotating the filter.

I don't have to take the hood off my 24-70. I merely do a quick zoom to the 24 mm position if I cannot reach the filter to rotate the ring. The hood is big enough, though, that I can usually reach the filter with relative ease.

My Leica R 35/2 has a thumbwheel on the side of its hood for rotating the CP.

Thanks, but i guess my question is (pardon the ignorance) does the cpl negate the hood?
Or, am i still vulnerable to lens flare even with the filter on?

Thanks again,

No

Yes. Very much so, if you have bright light sources (even reflections of the sun, for example) in the scene that the camera is looking at.

I've never used the hood for the 10-22 - it just seems to wide to achieve anything except when the lens is at 10mm (which I never used.)

You will get weird sky effects if you polarise light entering the 10-22. This is because skylight is polarised in different orientations so that the polariser has a variable effect. It's probably better to use a graduated neutral density filter if the sky is too bright. That said, unless the effect is extreme, you can usually pp it out.

24-70... don't have one but the hood's generally a good idea and can protect your lens from decelleration trauma on the ground.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.
