Okay, hoping you folks can help me here.

I've got a 1Dc and it's having some problems.

The vertical controls stopped working, but after googling this issue I followed some guys advice to run a bit of foil under the vertical shutter release. This did actually work (for reasons unknown to me!). However, after replacing the battery it stopped working and the "fix" no longer works.

I've also been getting error 99s with all lenses especially the 400mm when I point it above the horizontal. Initially I thought this was a contact problem, but I've had no problems with the lenses on the 20D. This happens in both vertical and horizontal shooting. The errors are intermittent and I can take quite a few photos with no error then get an e99.

I've put it into AJ Johnstone (and am now regretting it as their reputation isn't great). I put it in on Tuesday and they've still not even looked at it. When I phoned to check on it I was told that they do their estimate work on a Friday. I then phoned on Friday to ask if they'd had a look at it yet - "no you'll be e-mailed" was the response.

According to the foxbat actuation counter (http://www.foxbat.me.uk/2.0/index.php#/freesoftware (external link)) the camera has done 25,420 actuations which seems pretty low for the shutter to be failing.

However, that is exactly what the tech suggested when I checked it in. I'm not so sure and I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the matter?

If it is the shutter does anyone know what a new shutter will cost roughly?

Thanks muchly in advance!

A shutter can fail at any time and from what I have seen here in the US the price can average around $400 but I have seen lower and higher depending on different circumstance .

If you are thinking the Canon published shutter expectancy number being higher ...
LOL - those numbers get higher the more you pay for the camera but ...
the shutters are very much the same and no warranty is honored on actuations.
So its kinda scam.
One of the tricks they use is more oil for longer life but that often
means a oild drop on your sensor.
Prices for new installed shutters start at $250 for APS C cameras but you might expect as high as $400 for the FF.
Also might consider Canon Loyality Peogram trade in ...
I would stay with Canon Service if I had a camera needing service.

I knew they don't replace the shutter free if it fails prematurely.

Unfortunately Canon don't think enough of us brits to give us a loyalty program.

The guys I've handed the camera into are Canon approved but they don't get a good write up and I'm not impressed by them thus far.

So do you folks think the tech is right and the shutter is failing? I'm hoping it's just a loose connection for the vertical controls (which should be cheap to fix in my opinion) and I don't know what I hope it is for the err99! Something cheap anyway!

have not heard of the 1D having shutter probelms ,this appears to be more of a 1Dmk11 issuse.Although the 1d has a mechanical shutter the main shutter is the switching on and off of the sensor

So potentially just a dodgy connection somewhere between the button and the shutter?

Update:
They've sent my estimate - quite eye watering: total cost £577.56
Seems they need to replace the vertical release assembly and the mirror box. Obviously I'm not going to be getting that repaired - almost twice what I paid for the camera!

Absolutely gutted - don't know what I'm going to do. Any thoughts?

That doesn't seem too bad for the work they put down, doubt anywhere else would be any cheaper.
It's a lot for that old a body though, I appreciate that!

The mirror box is really the heart of the camera (and the expensive bit) as it carries not only the mirror assembly but also the AF module as well - which is where your errors came from.
It doesn't sound as if there is anything wrong with the shutter though.............

You could look at a 1DMkII.

That's probably what I'll be going for - sold a couple of lenses today - no sooner had they gone on ebay and they were sold. My 105mm went for just over £200 and my 50mm for just over £60. I'll see if I can sell the 1D "as seen" and explain the situation. Could probably harvest some parts from it plus the charger will be worth something too. Then I'll see what I can afford. There was a guy who said he got a mirror box assembly fitted for £240 + 70 for labour but even that's a bit steep compared to the price of the camera. See what bodies are on the market in my price range once I've paid my car insurance
