F8.0 looks the best on my monitor. What do you think ?

Regards, ;)

It does.

How is the AF with 2xTC on 70-200mm f2.8 II and how does it compares to 400mm f5.6? I bet it can come close to the AF of the 400mm prime.

I haven't yet tested my 70-200mm 2.8 IS II with 1.4x TC or the 2xTC. Maybe I should compare TCs with my 300mm f2.8 IS someday.

From my tests the 400L f5.6 prime will be better versus any of the 2X extenders using a crop body + the 70-200 MKII. Although it will be closer in performance as you speculate using the 5D MKII + 70-200 MKII + the new Canon 2X III extender.

Regards, ;)

AF of TS2X and 400/5.6 is possible on any Canon dSLR with Live View. In the menu enable Live View "Live" AF; this is contrast detect. This gets around the f8 requirement of phase detection AF in non 1D bodies. switch to Live view and AF with the back button. The shutter half press will not be active in Live View, neither for phase detection nor contrast detection. However back button will be active with contrast detection with an f8 lens combo.

My 70-200 F4 IS is sold. I'm doing some shots with it to email the buyer. I thought I'd try the TC2III on it, no AF of course, but what the heck.

200mm with TCIII, or 400mm F8

Is the fuzzyness from movement when using flash in ambient? Is that WhiteBalance card moving during the shots?

The WhiBal card is static, exposure is flash, ISO 100, 1/200 sec. on a tripod. The other thing to take into account is the printing on the WhiBal label is not exact.

Here is the same shot stop down 1 from 8 to 11 (without the TC2III it would be going from 4 to 5.6)

First post here.

I have a 2 week old 7d/70-200 F2.8 IS II/TC2 III I have been playing with to see if I can get by without the 100-400 for outdoor/wildlife shots.

I was concerned about both IQ and AF but this weekend I took a ton of shots of my bird dogs and I think this combo will work.

Any problems with the combo are more likely related to the shooter.

Focus seemed fast to me (nothing to compare with though).

This shot was at 270mm, F6.3, 1/320 with focus on lead dog. No PP except crop. I have a bunch more if anyone wants to see them.

Thanks a lot Windpig and MTDuke for taking the effort of making/posting the pictures , seems like f8.0 gives the nicest results in your pictures, Now just need to decide whether the f5.6 from the 400 prime is worth the extra 650 euro? Though decisions to be made..

These pictures are taken with my 7D/70-200mm mkII/2xTC mkII (all Canon)

The first was taken hand held at 400mm (640 equivalent) Stabiliser position 2. iso 400 and f10. The second was similar although It doesn't look that sharp, but the crop below it shows there is still some detail there. I would guess the guy was about 150 yards away moving at speed and I tracked him using AI Servo.

I would have loved to see his video. I am on it it I guess as he looked at me at one point and waved. Sadly I was packing up at the time :(

I was wondering about the video myself. His carbon fibre helmet is way cool.

If I were to trying compare the results of a 70-200mm (series) lens with or without a TC against a 400mm f/5.6L; I would do the test shots at distances for which I would most generally use these lenses. For me, that would be distance shots...

However, I would also shoot a stationary target on a clear day using a tripod, mirror lock-up and a remote release.

Of course, if I were wanting to measure the camapility of action shooting in general between the two lenses, the only way to do this would be to shoot moving subjects. Then you are not exactly comparing lens against lens but, how each lens suits your individual style of action shooting. This is of course what you might be interested in. However, I may do differently with these two lenses than you do...
