I'm new to all this "professional" photo stuff. From what I'm reading, I'll need to get a new monitor in order to accurately edit photos. I've read several threads where people are talking about certain monitors that they just bought, or are considering.

My question is, what should I be looking for in a monitor for photo editing? I'm not buying one tomorow, so I'm not asking for model numbers. I'm just asking what it is in a monitor that makes it good for this application.

Gear: 60D Canon EF-S 18-135mm , EF 50mm 1.8f II, 2 - 430ex Speedlights, an old cheapo tripod, and a Kata R-103 bag.

I've been much of that looking myself and it depends on your budget and uses first. One of the most popular choices around photographers to start is a matte screen as most glossy monitors create slightly less accurate colors. Secondly depending on your budget go as big as you can fit, the higher resolution will make it easer to edit because you'll have more room to play. The Dell U2410 seems to be one of the most popular monitors on this forum and from some of the external reviews I've seen it looks like an impressive screen.

I'd suggest searching around the forum a bit, a bunch of threads like this already exist.

Look for an IPS screen that's within your budget, and leaves some money to buy a calibrator.

This is exactly correct. There a couple sites to peruse that tend to cater to the information that photographers want to know about monitors and they are:
