Visited the Everglades in Florida last week. They say gators have been around for some 200 million years; they pre-date the dinosaurs. All T1i with 24-105L in Av mode.

These buggers are pretty mellow until they decide to eat. Then, I suppose, something deep inside snaps and crazy bloodlust engulfs them. Here, though, they were just hanging out getting some sweet Springtime rays.

This bubba was even bigger than he looks here. They had this amazing video at the Visitor's Center showing gators mating. The males fight and, although they don't chomp the crap out of each other, they do get a bit bloody doing battle. But come honey-time, the males gently nuzzle the ladies to get them in the mood. It was really adorable to watch.

No love to share, guys? I mean, if you ask 100 ladies for a little smack on the lips, you've got the odds in your favor. I figured after 150 views something in one of these pics would strike a fancy... No? Just kind-of average, perhaps...

The first image is my favorite by leaps and bounds. The others include visible alligators. <G>

Nice job. I am going in July and am psyched already of all the opportunities.

Lucky for all of us they have a series of boardwalks setup. The viewing setup is amazing in its own right. So keep your fingers and toes inside the lines....

What the ranger told us is this: "If it moves, they'll eat it."

Nice job. I am going in July and am psyched already of all the opportunities.

What's amazing is that there were, say, 100+ people out there and it was a piece of cake to keep them out of the photos. What I gathered from the Ranger Talk is that the gators sunbath to get heat, which helps them digest their meals, so late afternoon when it's hotter brings out a few more. The Everglades is an absolute first rate park, and it's massive... I'd plan a 12-hour day minimum and hit all the Ranger Talks. Bring food and water and keep in mind that the bathrooms are few and far in-between. I'd consider long pants and maybe even a long sleeved shirt, but it'll be hot.
