nice shot, great detail. Mind sharing how you focused, that seems to be my biggest problem, a hit and miss event.

nice shot, great detail. Mind sharing how you focused, that seems to be my biggest problem, a hit and miss event.

Here are some focusing hints that work for my 7D and 400/5.6L lens when using both of my extenders:

  • Use Live View with X10 magnification.
  • AF with rear button
  • Try focusing on limb of moon.
It is possible to AF in LV even when the wide open aperture is f/16. If you can't AF on X10 magnification, try X5 or X1. Manual focusing is very touchy. You must do it at X10 to be as accurate as possible. Practice -- a lot.

While LV AF can get you very close to perfect focus, it rarely is perfect. Once AF gets you in the right neighborhood, you can tweak it with manual focusing. This is very touchy and you will need to wait for the vibrations to ring down before judging how close the focus is to perfect. Sometimes I spend a lot of time tweaking and other times, I hit it right away. One of these days I plan to try AF with a laptop computer running EOS Utility.

Just as important as razor sharp focusing -- is having a rock solid tripod and head -- otherwise, vibration will eat your lunch. While the following sounds like overkill, it really isn't.
  • Use LV silent shooting mode 1. Mode 1 replaces the first shutter curtain with an electronic curtain while LV eliminates the issue of mirror vibration.
  • Use a remote release cable and time delay shutter release. A wired remote shutter release is not enough to prevent vibration -- I use it to trigger the timed shutter release.
  • Anchor the tripod center column with bungee cords to solid ground. This helps to stiffen up the tripod.
  • Drape a shipping blanket over the tripod legs to absorb vibration. Anything that you can do to dampen vibration is a good thing.
  • Use a gimballed head so that the camera/lens can pivot about its center of mass.
  • If it is windy or slightly hazy, you are screwed.
  • For best results, the moon should be near the zenith. This means that you do not have much time before summer when the moon does not get very high in the sky.
It goes without saying that the best images are made when the moon is in a crescent phase. A full moon is not good for getting any surface detail.
