What's up guys. Just picked up my T2i about 2 weeks ago... my first DSLR and very excited to learn all about photography! Also just picked up the nifty 50 and a sigma 10-20mm.

Now.. what would be a good walk around lens? :)

I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. Will it hurt the camera if you plug in the computer cord or remove the cord while the camera is on or should you shut the camera off each and every time that you load your pictures onto the computer?

hurt the camera, never. It's no different than plugging in a flash drive, and it doesn't have an on/off switch.

What OS do you run? The camera is viewed as just another external drive when you plug it in. With XP and anything lower (yuk), you should click the little icon at the bottom for "safely remove" and choose the drive. For Visa and Win7, this is just not needed as it manages files much nicer.

The worst thing that could happen is a corrupt file list, but that is only with XP or lower. when you plug it back in, you get a prompt to fix it.

As for a card reader, I personally hate the way MS OS's read the data. I prefer to have the Canon utility read the data and export the images. It's also nice to get a preview of each pic.

Hi Carmen,

Welcome aboard.

Nice portrait. I'm just having a debate with myself whether I would like it better had her chin not been cut off. Of course, I know virtually nothing about people shooting, so I'll defer to people who know more than I do.

You are correct about the framing, but given the situation, that is as good as I could get. This was shot on a boat with the nifty-fifty. I couldn't get any further away from the subject.

Welcome to POTN and the T2i owners Carmen (RedFire427)! Its great that you finally decided to post some pictures... I agree with others that posting here improves your skills. I have found that I pay closer attention to my images, I learn techniques, pick up tricks and suggestions, and, since I have been tagged here as 'talking too much and sharing few pictures', this forum makes me wanna go out and take pictures to share. So, it really is great you have decided to share your first images.

First, I like to comment on one particular issue that has caught my attention: your gear. Here you read: glass before camera, all the time! yet there is such an obsession of owning the latest bestest cameras, that this is very rarely the case. It is also true that for most, since this is a hobby, the budget is not unlimited so we end up sacrificing this or that particular aspect. You have managed to follow this advice to the very core of it: you have the 'smallest' camera that can provide fantastic results and the best glass there is to have, the 24-70 and the 70-200 f2.8. I really applaud that and hope that I am able to remain on a similar track always.

That said, I like your portrait image, it has a 'movies' quality to it, the framing (though I agree with Annie that a tad more chin and bit less forehead is the 'classic' approach), the color, the DoF. The difficulty here with smaller children is able to focus on the eyes while they move around. For that, one usually needs to sacrifice DoF and use smaller apertures to have more in focus, losing that quality. Your brave approach has paid, and while the focus is not exactly on the eyes, the image is well focused for my taste.

I must confess myself surprised to see the car fans amongst our female photographers here. Over here that is not that common, and not that there is anything wrong with it, but over here its usually the guys that drool over cars :). Is that picture an HDR? I ask because the hue of the shadows differs a bit from the hue of the highlights and the sky has that cyan look that is usual on HDRs. At any rate, that is a to-drool-for car, that's for certain, and you have shot it in a way that it shows.

Thanks for sharing, looking to many more from you.

Rafa.
ps. Thanks a lot for the kind words, I mean it when I say I don't think it's all that true, but they are most welcome regardless, you are very kind.

Rafa,
Based on your welcome, I'm sure my name ( Carmen ) must have made you assume I am female..........Not. I can assure you I am all male. Easily confused I know. Thanks for the welcome and I hope I can learn from yourself and many of the other "pros". The car photo is not an HDR although it does resemble one. The original photo was very over-exposed, but I liked the setting very much. I played around with it in Lightroom to see how much I could recover and this was the final outcome.

Aloha Rafa - glad to see that the beautiful vegetation (but have a nagging desire to try and match your skill capturing it);

Carmen - I can almost hear your summer toy's engine popping.

It won't be long before I get her back on the road.

I'm stuck at home, waiting for a delivery (wrist strap), and I'm bored. So I went out on the catwalk and shot these. Apologies to those who are sick to death of ducks.

Speaking of deliveries, apparently my complaint last week did not fall on deaf ears. The problem now is the company that didn't require a signature and would leave a package on the doorstep, is now making us sign for our packages........ on a piece of paper no less. So much for modern technology.

So, I'm stuck today, and tomorrow too. Oh well.

:) Anne

Anne, make sure you let us know how you like the strap. I have been thinking about getting one since the neck strap only get in the way when it is never used. Not to mention the strap that came with the T2i was rough and stiff. I had to switch it out for my XTI strap that was much softer.

I'll let you know, but the strap I'm really anxious for will be here tomorrow. It's the knockoff brand that's similar to the Black Rapid and the Sun Sniper. I'm hoping that's the solution to the strap problems.

I tried to switch out the Canon strap for my old (film days) strap, which is super soft, but it just wouldn't stay on.

Very nice. I'm kind of torn between the two. I like the saturation on the 2nd shot, but I think I would prefer that look with a little lighter sky (like in the first shot).

Good job with the tone mapping though. Are you using photomatrix?
