As we had had a glorious day, in anticipation of a glorious evening, I drove over to high area (the Long Mynd) this evening. Sadly, there was still evidence of light polution, even so:

20 second exposure with flash painitng

I like this one a lot. Now that I have a flash I can't wait to do some light painting to accent my star trails.

That's whats interesting of this type of photography for me. A 17 minute exposure is no necessarily better than a 35 second exposure... but imagine how far the clouds will travel (and how many shapes they will get) in 17 minutes! Any water in the image will transform into cotton-candy. Also, if you catch the early morning or sunset the colors in the sky during that period will change while you capture them, so the resulting color is almost surreal! That's what is so appealing about 10 f-stop ND filters for most people. Check out the link I posted and you will see in pictures what I just have described.

Exposure is measured without the filter on, and then calculated... doubling the time for each f-stop of ND filter. That you can do with tables, with a calculator or on your head :) . As you figured it out you HAVE to use bulb and have a remote (wired or wireless) trigger. The camera shows a clock that tells you how long the image has been exposed.

For me, its fascinating!

Some think this looks unnatural, and that is precisely what is interesting of this long exposure images to me.

The tilt stuff seems overly complicated and layers requires photoshop. I prefer to stay in LR as much as possible so I will probably pass on that type of processing though the write up was definitely interesting.

This info about the long exposures is awesome. Will definitely try this out - I do have a ND8 which should get me a long enough exposure. Also didn't know that bulb displayed the total elapsed time - that's useful as now I won't have to bring a stopwatch and a flashlight to see the time.

I'm looking for harsh criticism of my photos - tell me how to improve, I will be grateful.

Ok. I haven't actually posted any pics lately, so I'm gonna take this chance to do so. Big Al's Daily round up will come later tonight.

I am entering a photo contest hosted by my local music store, and I need help choosing an image. I pretty much love each one of these, so I need help!!

Here we go:

1. White Hot Blues:

WOW.. most outstanding Wolfy..... you got my vote.... ;)

Welcome in advance.

The nifty fifty is certainly cheap and provides a lot of bang for your buck, but if you are looking for a solid everyday walkaround lens it's a bit too long IMO. Remember, on a 1.6x crop body that would basically be like walking around with an 80mm lens.

If you have just a little more money to spend on a good prime I think it's far more versatile to shoot for something in the 28-35mm range, which puts you at close to an effective 50mm focal length which is considered "normal" on an old 35m or full frame body. Both Canon and Sigma make a few lenses in this range and you'll get even better glass and some added benefits such as better auto focus mechanisms which will come in quite handy in low light.

I've been carrying my camera everywhere I go. That's a good way to get to know your equipment and you never know when an opportunity will crop up (yeah, yeah, I know...LOL). This was while I was walking out of work tonight. I love crows! I think they are beautiful and a mystical bird. There has been a lot written from aboriginal peoples about the crow, what the crow signifies, or what he portends. Crow is always around me. This one seemed to wait for me, then take off after I shot him sitting. I will still shooting from the hip when I got him flying. I had my kit lens on my camera 18-55. Since I work so slow in photoshop and Gimp, I only cropped, straightened, and sharpened a bit. I had no idea what to do about the dude in the red shirt.....

Not bad, but you're right, they are too quick for those settings. A general rule of thumb is no less than 1/500 to capture most human/animal motion, but in some cases you'll need closer to 1/1000.

Since you're already at 1/250 I'd say just going one stop faster ISO should get you closer to what you need to freeze them.
