I know you get what you pay for - but I'm interested in getting a flash. I was looking at the speed lights and I don't have the money for them right now. Is there any off brand ones like there are battery grips that would be worth having?

There is a lot of talk on this topic! Many here have the Yongnuo, which is super cheap. However, it does tend to break, although there is a link somewhere to a DYI fixit routine that apparently actually works.
I bought the Nissin 622. It is just over 100 bucks, and powerwise is (I believe) not far behind the middle canon flash (the 430?) but doesn't support some off camera triggers and things that people who are into flashes soon start using. For indoor shots where you want to bounce a flash off the wall or a ceiling (on camera or attached to the hotshoe by a cord), however, it is very good. Mine will sometimes refuse to initially power up, and I have to "start it" a couple of times. Once it's on, though, it is dependable and is pretty quick from shot to shot. I think there is more flash talk at the "official T2i thread".
Since I'm here, a garlic shot:)

Well I obviously need to practice this setup a bit more, but I tried dropping some red colored water into some milk tonight. I think there is a lot of promise here with some trial and error.

Thanks everyone for the votes on my Guitar pictures. I'm still looking for more insight/suggestions/votes!!!

@Rafa - since you mentioned that the cable was drawing attention away from the guitar, I decided to get rid of it. So here's the shot with the cable removed. (and btw, they are called frets in english :) )

Oh! Fantastic shot!! I love the play of light/shadow as well as the color vs. white. Really cool shot!

Rafa.

Big Al’s Daily Round Up!!!

@Dwain – Congrats on the new lens. I hope it treats you well!

@bobo – nice flower pics!

@Annie – I love the timing of your Duck shots, and that expression is priceless!!! I’m not sure who had more fun, the Duck or you! That other bird you posted has the most amazing eyes!!

@Abuha - welcome aboard, and that’s a very beautiful first post to our thread. Your lens collection is actually quite stunning :)

Wolfy, I think all 4 images are top notch! That said, I prefer #2 and #3 the best.
- #1 is nice, but I bet a few others will come with the same angle / idea, and I find it lacks a dramatic touch to it.
- #2 has that dramatic effect in the perspective and the color, though I see the body is a tad solarized. Not sure if that was intentional or not.
- #3 Again, a lot of drama in the perspective and the colors are more pleasing. Also the break of wall against ground is fantastic. Maybe I would have placed the focus point on the Gibson logo instead of the first fret (is that what they are called in English?)
- #4 On this one I like the PP a lot! and I like the angle and balance between wall and ground. What I don't like is the distracting cable or twisted bar on the left which draws attention away from the subject.

I it were me judging this 4, I'd pick #3 as the winner for me. Can you place more than one submission?

Rafa.

@Rafa – I really enjoy the pics of your dad! To me the lensbaby effect you’ve managed in post looks great, and could save us a wad of cash!! I have wondered about lensbaby, but not enough to make it more than a passing thought. I do agree that it has a time and place for effect though. I can see it being used for some non-traditional wedding photos.

As for my guitar series – I do agree that #1 has a generic feel. #2 was completely y intentional in pp. I wanted a gritty dirty feel to it. I’m not sure about #3, it’s not my favorite for sure. I think you’re right. I think focus on Gibson would have made the difference. I changed #4 so that the cable was no longer an issue. I think that #2 and #4 are my favorites now…… decisions decisions. Only one image can be submitted! Thanks for the praise too btw.

@Maru – Your flower shots are quite stunning. I’m very intrigued by the lighting. I’m leaning VERY heavily on the “I need a flash” side of the fence. That 28 is indeed sharp! Thanks for sharing your setup as well. Thanks for the vote on my guitar series too btw. The red into milk shot is great. What about it are you unhappy with?

@Digital – You just have to say that the NF is an amazing lens for the price. Great photos of your pooch :)

@Itzmered – that’s a cute little birdie. I don’t know what he is though.

@dirkkristen - That is a GREAT fly shot. Just crazy the things that can be captured.

@Badgerdid – Thanks for the vote on my guitar series! I just can’t seem to decide which I like the best!!

@Gawain - The bird in flight is a great capture! Those are hard to do!

@Allan – that is a great bird shot!! I think you might want to bump the exposure a tad, but otherwise, great shot!! That 150-500 certainly has me reconsidering my lens selection for long range….

@Trugga – those are some stunning shots. I can’t tell from the picture..what kind of truck is that?

@VFVhho – Welcome aboard!

@Telefragger – do you have your camera set to AI servo? If you do that and pan with your subject you should be able to use the speeds that yo u mentioned. Isn’t the 24-105 an F4 lens? I’d try going wide open and seeing what the results were just in case. Some of the Roller Derby shots I got were at 200-300, and that’s only because I was able to pan. I certainly don’t have steady hands!

@Mook – I LOVE the garlic shot. The color, the shadow, the composition. Just great!

@Ofwiah – that shot of the pup is too cute. And it’s sharp. Especially for wide open.

@Chandangle – I love the flower shot, and the shot with the Girl on your shoulders is very very cute!

@Natums - that is a nice shot. I love the background behind the ship! Hope your trip is wonderful!

Vectoria - a while back in response to your trinket shots I mentioned a thread about simple (and not so simple) setups one could easily do at home for still life stuff but had lost the link.

Found it now

Wolfy - glad you like the flower pics.

Cheers wolfy! I understand the photo looks a little dark and underexposed, which it is, for a sunny day ;) It was overcast and that is how the light was (or my accurate portrayal of it, didn't change much..) so why try to change it to match a bright sunny day? :)

Don't mean to sound like i'm being defensive just hoping everyone can enjoy and interpret different conditions. I notice a lot of folks trying to critique based on one 'standard' (if there is such a thing) of photography, yet not really looking into it for themselves? Not sure how to explain this as I feel I could sit here for a few hours doing so.. And wolfy this isn't directed at you i'm just going off on a rant, sorry :)

And after thinking, could this underexposure be my monitor? I have a fairly recent 20" lcd screen, that I manually calibrated but it could be off... Either way I appreciate the criticism and am usually one to take it all in and learn from it... as i said, just a rant... maybe i'm just going crazy studying. lol.

Well, this is how it was done. A flash, a shoot-through umbrella, a tripod, and a gold reflector. Then I just let the camera do the work!
