Ofwiah what awesome Circus pics! The color really pops on them.

Thank you Alyce. I love it too, but I really don't know what I did that caused it to be sharp where it should be, and blurred where it should be too. I really wish I knew, because it would be great to replicate it when wanted. Then again, maybe Mr. Cormorant was standing still enough so the camera only picked up the blur (which is what I suspect happened). I do shoot on burst, and there were only two shots like this one shot back to back), but this was the better of the two.

This was the other one:

I know how you feel when I take pictures and see a picture that is really good I wish I knew what I did to do it so now when I take a few pictures on a certain setting I look them over real fast and try to wright down my setting I used. May sound dumb that I do that but it works for me to learn more:)

also about what mode I use the most is AV as to why, I don't know, it just works for me. I keep changing my ISO and shutter speed lol. I am new at this stuff also.

Now that I photoshop do I set my camera to RAW and why?

Absolutely shoot RAW. RAW is like the negatives in film days. You don't degrade it when you make changes, like happens with JPEG, and you'll always have your original as shot, to fall back on.

I don't write down my settings, because I have an exif reader installed on my computer, so I can just right click on a photo and see what settings I used (provided I don't bring them in from Flickr, which seems to remove the exif info).

For instance, the exif info for the shot we both like is:

Camera Maker: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS REBEL T2i
Lens: EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Image Date: 2011-04-08 13:29:42 -0400
Focal Length: 123.0mm
Focus Distance: 11.40m
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 0.0056 s (1/180)
ISO equiv: 100
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
White Balance: Manual
Flash Fired: No (enforced)
Orientation: Normal
Color Space: Adobe RGB (1998)
GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined
Photographer: Anne Rodkin
Copyright: 2011 Anne Rodkin

And the second shot is:

Camera Maker: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS REBEL T2i
Lens: EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Image Date: 2011-04-08 13:29:42 -0400
Focal Length: 123.0mm
Focus Distance: 11.40m
Aperture: f/5.6
Exposure Time: 0.0040 s (1/250)
ISO equiv: 100
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
White Balance: Manual
Flash Fired: No (enforced)
Orientation: Normal
Color Space: Adobe RGB (1998)
GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined

Very handy to have when I want to see what might be different. In this case, all other things being equal, the only difference I can see is the exposure (shutter) time. I'm pretty sure I shot this in burst though, and since both were shot in aperture priority, the camera chose the shutter speed (although I still don't get why they'd be different).

:) Anne

It's all about learning how the "Bermuda Triangle of Photography" (aka aperture, shutterspeed, iso) works :-) And knowing the "sweet spot" of your lens is also quite important ...

And please don't laugh, but when an animal, bird, lizard, etc., allows me to get some shots off, I always thank them. Literally!!

I would never laugh at that Anne. I thanked that crow on Friday. To me, he seemed to be sitting there waiting for me. Then flew off after my shot, posing. Ha, he was a poser... LOL

Craig, I'm a firm believer that these creatures understand, and appreciate us showing them respect. If not, I've lost nothing by saying thank you to them.

So spring is on it's way here in CO. Our springtime flowers are on the way. The main crop of tulips are not quite there yet but here are a few from my yard.
