Son graduated from Marine Corps training at San Diego MCRD this month. Got a few okay hand-held shots. This was one time where I was almost completely after quantity of shots rather than quality. Just kept clicking away all day long.

Probably should have used a flash in the shade under the palm tree. FYI - that palm tree image was using a Tokina 12-24mm with a Marumi Circular Polarizer.

The rows of Sea Bags were pretty cool looking all neatly laid out in rows.

What focal length was the one you posted at? I've had mixed results with my lenses and I've tried them all. Some just don't render stars very well at all wide open and everything looks like an egg.

This is the best I've been able to muster so far, but I haven't had good skies to try again since. I wish I would have kept better notes on my flickr page because I can't remember how many files I used. But I know it was over 100 exposures, darks, and bias frames.

Thats a pretty good pic of orion!, from what i remember it was 55mm, from my 55-250mm lens because it had a lower f/ then my 18-55. I think at most i did 10 seconds at iso1600 then switched it up to 8 and 4 seconds with iso 3200. I cant remember if i had any dark frames or not, I dont think I did. I know the sky was really dark that night compared to my other orion shots.

Have you tried your 28mm on orion yet?

Here is some of a local waterfall

On the drive home. Our son. Northern CA, short way south of Weed and Mt. Shasta along Interstate 5, coming back from San Diego.

Yeah, I have and it doesn't work so well. Anything under f/2.8 and the brighter stars are very distorted and it's worthless. To get the stars perfect points of light I find I have to be in the 3.5-4 range. So, if I need to stop down that much I might as well use a different lens at that point.

just some randoms taken today, decided to go on a walk with my girlfriend, was a really foggy day, thought Id take some shots. Saw a huge swan in the water as I was pulling in, thought it was a dog or something thats how huge it looked.

Sorry to somewhat repost, but I had a chance to touch up one of my earlier photos from today. I brought out the blue skies a bit and made the ominous clouds a bit darker to make it look a little more like how the eye saw it.

By the way, computers are amazing. I'm also posting one of the original SOOC shots for comparison.

Congrats to your son and god bless our finest. My daughter is also a US Marine currently stationed in Afganistan.

It was trying like heck, but couldn't make it to the ground. Couldn't have asked for a more photogenic storm though. Usually these things are all wrapped in rain and you can't see anything, but this one was just beautiful.

Oh defenetly... Great job capturing it. I might be crazy but I'd like to see a twister before I die. But seeing it and actually having the courage to go and see it are 2 different things. Lol

Friends, we should really make a book with some of the images posted here... what fantastic group of images!!! And we have some 'series' that could be made into books of their own.

Most notably:
- Maru's weather shots - this last few of the 'tornado watch' are just amazing!
- jccj58's eagles!!! You had me watching the hatching of eagles online, but your own pictures of this other nest are just astonishing! I love the younglings jumping on the nest testing their skills... and they are as big or bigger than the adult ones!
- 04yellowf150's skies. That 'stacked' image of the milky way is just breathtaking! Notable images all around!
- Great seeing Al posting back, I've missed seeing your kids, great images.
- Welcome to all the newcomers!!! This is the place to be... hope to see lots of pictures from everyone.

Everyone else, sorry for not commenting individually... there are so many great images, from gepixelt or itzmered fantastic birds, to Annie's great dragonflies, Sue's great trip, to all the people shots around from birthday girls to street candids. Simply amazing! You have made me miss my picture taking. Not only am I strapped to the computer this days, but we have had the most rain we have had in 12 years! The only picture I have taken recently (literally shot 2 pictures) is of my keyboard to create a visual for a WEB page :) .

There's another issue I wanted to quickly comment on:

Redfire427 wrote in post #12298993 (external link)
...I see you had the ISO at 800. That should be a thing of the past with the 70-200 f2.8L. ...Also, did you have the image stabilizer turned on?

Vectoria wrote in post #12299011 (external link)
Last time I had it on on 200 and picture still blurr so maybe I will try 400 yes I did have the stabilizer on, I don't really ever shut it off. Thanks for your critisims:)

Carmen, I disagree... I believe at this point Vectoria needs as much shutter speed as possible! I would even suggest she'd use ISO1600 or even 3200 if that helps getting faster shutter speeds. Of course opening to f4 or faster could help also, but would make focusing a challenge.

Now, you asked Vectoria if she had the IS on, and she answered she did, but she does not have IS on that fantastic 70-200 f2.8L so I'm sorry to tell you both that you weren't using IS Vectoria , you can't. :)

Best regards all, I know I say it all the time, but I really miss you guys a lot!! See you all around,

Rafa
