can someone please take a look at my pics? page 379:) thank you

As near as I can make out from the exif info, you were on manual focus. I think for these type of shots, auto might serve you better. I think I can see what you were trying to do, but the focus appears to be elsewhere.

The potential is certainly there. Watch your composition too. There are poles and trees that are just distractions and don't really enhance anything. In fact, in one or two shots, it looks like that's where your camera was focusing.

May I ask what focus mode you're on? I use spot mainly, but that's because I generally shoot wildlife subjects. For wide scenincs, I suspect matrix might be a better option for you.

As for the shot of the cup, I actually think that's the best one you posted. It's sharp, and there are no distracting elements in the shot at all.

Don't get discouraged, Keep practicing. Before you know it, it will come.

And just a suggestion if I may. When posting, try to leave a space or two between shots. It makes it much easier to look at them and concentrate on just the one shot.

You'll need to give us the post # (upper right hand corner) There are different settings for number of posts on a page. So your page 379 wont be my page number 379. does that make sense?

John

John's a little slow today.

So are we gonna see some owl pics? :D

Doubt it.

I do not have the equipment to get shots of the owls when they are awake. During the day they are probably sleeping and pretty well hidden. Otherwise they would not have the energy for their night time modelling assignments.

I was told that some of these photographers arrive with arm-length size lens, powerful portable batteries for strobes etc. Really fancy work going on. But come to think of it, I can go an photograph the activity. hehe

A few of my pics! Any comments or critiques welcome; keep in mind, though, that I'm very new to photography with no previous experience, training, or instructions. Learning a lot of this on my own up until now. I'm really excited to have found this forum with fellow enthusiasts who are willing to share techniques and pictures.

Looks like you've been learning very well. These are lovely.

I love the first shot. Don't know if it's possible to get a position that would eliminate that metal railing and ladder. We sometimes have no choice, but if you can find a spot that lets you get that scene without it, I think it would be amazingly good.

I also love the one on the beach, although they're all pretty darned good.

Thanks Annie. I'm pretty sure I can get a shot without the railing. I love going out and taking pictures. Something about it is very relaxing and therapeutic.

Nunyo - in order I like
wooly dog - cute. Eyes could do with a bit of brightening.
beach - perhaps do a b/w and see if that looks better
carvers - you captured the "i better not cut myself" expression of the middly guy very well.

The other 3 are very nice too.

I doubt if you are as new to this as you claim to be. If mine were even 1/3 of yours, I'd be jumping all over...

Thanks for the comments bobo! I'll look into making those changes. Haven't had a chance to do any post-production editing.

I appreciate the compliment, but yes I'm just recently getting into photography. I made sure to read some books on digital photography, so maybe that helped a little.

Continuing the discussion about high ISO from this morning.....

I looked out my window (2nd floor) and noticed a butterfly flitting around outside. Now, these things never seem to light for some reason, and I've never been able to get a workable shot of one (they're always blurry). So, I grabbed the camera which was still set at ISO 1600, and got these. And oh yes... there was tons of noise, but Neat Image did a pretty good job of toning that down I think.

I'm totally amazed, and this should be a very good lesson to all of us to never close our eyes and minds to something new (even if you think it won't work), and at least try. Even with some noise, I'd rather have shots like these, than no shots at all.

My favorite from this set. Nice job. I like the fact that the road is empty.

ETA - I just realized someone said she has a constant 2.8 lens, so I guess that makes AV priority kinda useless....Is that correct?

I noticed nobody had replied to this question...

The "constant" refers to the fact that the entire zoom range can be served by a 2.8 aperture, as opposed to the (cheaper, lighter, smaller) variable zooms found on the kit lenses, where the wider end of the zoom range has a smaller aperture than the far end.

(e.g, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, meaning at 18mm, you've got a f/3.5 aperture as your widest, at 55, it's f/5.6)

In either case, smaller apertures ("higher" f-stops) are still available, so you can stop it down to whatever the shot requires, meaning that AV is still a useful/usable mode.

Thanks Killer. I don't know about stunning, as much as how upping the ISO to 1600 gave me shots I just couldn't get any other way.

Now the trick for me will be to figure out when I need to go that high, vs. when I don't.
