My girlfriend and I are trying to justify our next purchase - the X100. We've heard nothing but great reviews (however, there are counterclaims that state that the lens itself is soft at f2.0 and whatnot).

First of all, please consider the following notes before you post!
- This will be my girlfriend's camera.
I'll get to use it to but she wants a camera that she travels with and produces GREAT images that document her life - that's all she cares about and I'm glad that she even wants to document her tours and our life together.
- She values sharp, crisp images in all lighting conditions she faces. Which is why she shoots with the 24L and shoots mostly at f2.0 and smaller. For example, she knows the iso limitations of the 7D and rarely goes over ISO 1250.
- She values a lightweight camera so it's easier for her to clear customs. She personally HATES the 24-70L because it's too heavy for her. (Side note: and just like me, she hates the f2.8 aperture of the 24-70L). She ended up picking up my 24L and now will never let it go. I miss that lens :(
- We have other wants as well so we can't afford both the 7D and the x100.

Obviously there are pros and cons with each camera. We (my girlfriend and I) understand that this is like comparing apples to oranges so please put yourself in our shoes.

So at the end of it all, would you do it? Would you sell your 7D for an Fujifilm x100.

If it's going to be her camera, then sure. If she believes that she'll be happier carrying the X100 around vs. the size/bulk/weight of the 7D + 24L, then what makes her happy makes more sense.

Question is why are you ditching the 24L? Can't you just reclaim it?

Thank you for your comment Julian! It definitely helps with our decision! She loves her 7D, however, at the same time, it sits on her desk collecting dust! HAHHAHA!

The Fujifilm X100 actually looks pretty good. If I wanted something I could shove in my bag and didn't have the money to go with the Leica M9, then this would be an excellent camera to go with. I would like to see the reviews first before making the change.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

That is sound advise! I was looking at the MTF values of the Fujinon 23mm f2 Lens, and I definitely did not like what I see. Fortunately, the backorders are so long that I can't even order one yet.

To me the fujifilm X100 seem's faddish in appearance (Leaving aside that it is a capable camera.)
She might want to use one for a little bit before committing.

Do you have any idea if she is buying it JUST because of the styling?

I know it seems shallow but that is part of the appeal of the fujifilm X100 for some it would seem.
A classic design in a modern world is all Fad. :D

Again, leaving aside that it is a capable camera.

But the 7D is already available to her. The X100 may be months in arriving. Unless you plan to sell the 7D after the x100 arrives. Be aware, cameras don't hold their value like they used to.

Does X100 produce better images at higher ISOs? Sorry I have't looked. Also about only using 1250 on 7d, isn't 7d could do better? I only got way old 1dmk2 and 5d1 but my quick comparison testing with 7d shots quite nice output at ISO3200. But then I don't go above 16x20 in prints.

I would like to have X100, wish it was cheaper somewhat.

I personally wouldn't, but given the criteria, the X100 seems to suit her needs perfectly. Go for it.

Go for it. Sell everything you have and get the X100.

Giving your "girlfriend" a say in your finances is your first mistake, don't compound that one with another.

I am getting the x100 for the exact same reason, to document my travels without having to lug around a complete dslr kit with me. I travel for business and it is a major pain to have to carry a computer, carryon luggage and another bag for the dslr. The x100 will easily fit into the computer case without adding any weight or bulk.
