Absolutely! I own two copies of the discontinued Elinchrom 17" square reflector and decided today to adapt one for use on an Einstein. This wasn't a very challenging adaptation. The original Elinchrom mounting ring is attached to the square reflector with four rivets. Once the rivets were drilled out, the remaining holes were sized perfectly for 6-32 machine screws. I drilled four new holes in my long-suffering Kacey AB adapter and:

The Elinchrom square relfector came with both a grid (seen above) and a layer of heavy diffusion material which could be placed behind it.

An additional 3/8" hole, strategically placed, allows the deflector from an AB beauty dish to be installed:

Jerry Kacey's AB adapter, being perfectly flat, allows the Einstein flashtube to sit well inside the reflector:

This mod is easily reversible in that the original Elinchrom mount can be reattached in minutes.

Now for some testing ........

It took you long enough to get around to this modification, Dave. ;)

Nice job.

I'd be interested to see how it performs.

The truth of the matter, Rob, is that the square reflector is something of a collector's item and I was hesitant to indulge my desire to do the mod. After reading Hermes' post about how he defiled his square reflector, I decided to go ahead and swap mounts.

If nothing else, I'm reasonably certain I'm the only person in Westchester with an Elinchrom square reflector for his Einstein.

I'd put money on the fact that you're the ONLY one in all of New York state, if not the entire US. I'm not a gambler but I've got a good feeling about this one. :D

Rob,
Can I have some of your action. It would be foolish to bet the other side.

Dave,
That looks like it could work for backgrounds. Not with the grid but otherwise.

It's actually pretty rare that a frog is depicted as female. My guess is that Dave is also one of the few people with such an item.

Beauty certainly is in the eye of the beholder but she surely is a hottie!!! ;)

Wouldn't there have been less damage w/ Kacey's Elichrom adapter that you could tie the Kacey AB adapter to? :-O

Could you post pics using that weird reflector? Do you really get a square light out of it?

That square catchlight would definitely make for some very interesting shots. Reminds me of the catchlights silverlake photo sells to create different looks in the eye.

Nice mod.

The idea of a square catch light with the quality of light resembling that of a beauty dish is very attractive.

I'd love to see some real world samples with this reflector. It's one of the few modifiers that completely fascinates me.
