I got a 6 inch BD from Adorama and it works flawlessly. Here's a sample image using it.

If I recall correctly the Strobies dish I have eats about 2 stops of light.
That is a lot when using a hot shoe flash. It also is not that much bigger a light source than the flash itself.

I saw the Calumet version the other day. What I like about it is the grids it will accept.

As I mentioned earlier I have both the Calumet and Adorama Flashpoint Speedlite kits. They look very similar and the grids do interchange but, the Calumets are built much cheaper and do not throw as even of a light pattern as the Flashpoints without some modification.

The Calumet attach straps have week sewing and pull apart very easily. The Calumet beauty dish deflectors are just little flimsy aluminum disks while the Flashpoints are oblong molded plastic and come in three flavors (white, silver and gold). The light pattern from the Flashpoint, because of their better designed deflectors, has a very nice even light pattern while the Calumet has a doughnut shaped pattern which is bright around the edge with a darker middle. I modified one of my Calumets with a Glad round storage dish and a convex mirror and now it has as even of a light pattern as the Flashpoint. I did not modify my second Calumet dish because I had planned to do some comparisons between the Interfit Strobies, Adorama Flashpoints as well as the Calumets both original and modified.

If you're asking about my image above, then yes.

I bought the Adorama beauty dish for my 580EX. I must tell you, however, that if it covers the focus assist light, it's usefullness just dropped to 1/10th of what it would be.

I'll be testing the BD against my $16 Sto-Fen diffuser and post the results here.

I think most people that are going to use it will be doing so in a OCF setup... making focus assist worthless anyway. ;)

I use a flash bracket and hotshoe extender cable, which still allows AF assist. Is there a hotshoe/cable extension device that allows the flash off-camera but still illuminates the subject for AF assist?

IMHO, if you're using it OCF, you might as well get something larger than a 7" circle (area = 2*Pi*R = 22 sq").

The 8x12 softbox from fotodiox has more than 4x the area (96 sq"), costs less ($20 on amazon), and is more portable.

I wound up purchasing the impact strobros I linked to earlier. I have used it on camera and it seems to work well. It has 3 reflectors for the center, a gold shiny silver and a matte silver I am assuming the matte silver is supposed to be used foe white but i may paint it white anyway. I've only used the gold reflector so far. They also sell a grid pack separately, about the same price as the dish itself.

Well, I bought one. The first thing I did is shoot a comparison shot. Not a 100% test but at least it shows a comparison. The dish certainly blocks IR focus assist but not 100% like I had expected. I'll post the dish vs. a $16 Sto-Fen diffuser cup, and make another post showing straight vs. bounce.

From one test I think the dish produces better output than a Sto-Fen diffuser cup, but it's up to the user if the dish is worth losing partial focus assist and being $50.
