Slightly more than the length of one wing:

What you don't see is the rope line I'm sitting under which meant the pilot had to essentially pivot on his right main to swing around toward the taxiway. I also made sure before he cranked that he knew I'd be there. ;)

Good job Jay. Gotta love #1. Go warbirds. Are you going to be at the Chino Air show in May?

On the fence regarding Chino for this year.

On the one hand, I'm sure they'll do it up right for the Centennial of Naval Aviation and that would be worth seeing/shooting.

On the other hand, I'm already committed to a return to San Diego in June for ISAP and then Oshkosh comes kind of close behind so I'm trying to be prudent on which events will yield the most bang for the buck.

I'll know more in about a month.

Great photos Jay!

My wife had enough of the planes and sun so I was not able to wait until the planes, including the mustang on the taxiway, started up and left. Here are a few I got from the same location as your photo.

I was completely oblivious to anything without wings. A lot of great planes out there.

Indeed. I regret not bringing a longer lens out to the ramp but I didn't think there would be too many opportunities to shoot anything in flight. I took the more traditional PJ rig out with me. I'll know better next year.

Great Shots!! who owns the F-104 and is it flyable?

Frank

The 104 is a flyer, can't remember who owns it. It's a simple N number, but I can't remember the darn thing.

N104...

Hasn't flown in a couple years. Pilot hurt his back in a forced landing (not the 104) a while back and is still on the mend.

Last flying shots posted on our local group site are from late 2008.

I last saw that particular F-104 fly at the "Open House" that Scottsdale Airpark used to have. The plane was simply awesome to watch fly. Not sure if it was intentional but they did a missed approach at that show and when the plane was close to the ground they went full afterburner. Dirt was flying off the runway as the plane flew out. Was so loud the kid next to me started crying.

I only observed it at this show because I heard it taxi up. Did they just drive it out of the hangar or had they just flown and landed on 30L? The engine sound is to unique I knew exactly what it was before I turned around and saw it.

Here is a shot I got. I think Jay had the better angle. Seems to have taxied right up to him.
