No they dont, they have a hotshoe underneath with all the ttl pins intact.

You need a pinching cold shoe on your umbrella adapter now.

What is that?

Wow... I'm rather disappointed in that to be honest. :( Even my cheap (but functional) PT-04's at least have the threaded mount. Hmmm.... that does make me ponder getting them.

Something like this would likely do the trick then: http://strobist.blogspot.com …oe-locked-and-loaded.html (external link)

Or this:

I appreciate the "thanks" from everyone... feel free to pass it around as needed! I'd be happy to see it pop up in every RF thread :)

Oh yeah... if it pops up in a YN manual, I'd love to get a set for free! ;)

Hi MinnGreenGT, I quoted your diagram in another thread for V5's. It was easier to show the diagram than try to explain in words... very helpful.

One of the response was this (a link that compares wireless flash triggers):
https://photography-on-the.net …?p=12048247&postcount=372

In the area that discusses number of units needed for wireless camera and flash, it shows that the RF603 only needs 3 units. Is that correct to you? Just want to know for sure. Thanks.

I'm not sure how one would only need 3 units? Each function needs to be independent of the other. 2 units: One to send the shutter signal, one to receive it. 2 more units: One to send the flash signal, one to receive it. The units (AFAIK) only operate in TX or RX mode (not both).

As I understand it, having the unit mounted on the hotshoe with a flash AND the shutter trigger - pressing the transmitter button would cause the unit to try and fire both the shutter and flash simultaneously (which they shouldn't... as there is a slight time delay in there).

(from the Strobist discussion)

Units needed to trigger one camera and one flash wirelessly
Rf603 and PW have a special channel used exclusively for camera triggering, and this works separately to the flash triggering system. Shutters and flashes need to be triggered at slightly different times as the mechanical shutter doesn’t work as quickly as electronic flash. Rf603 and PW require only 3 units to perform both functions : one on camera, one in hand to trigger the camera and one under the flash.

...this is the first I've heard of this on the RF603's. May have to look into it further!?

I hope someone does. Two different sets of info... confusing.

Using one in hand, one in the shutter release port and one on the camera allows no access to the camera's sync information (either through the hotshoe or PC port if it exists) so it cant work.

^^ now you guys see why i was originally confused!!!!!!!!!!!!

documentation said one thing... then i couldnt figure it out.. and you guys say another.. but of course i blieved the crew up here!!!!!

since there is a hotshoe for the flash on the unit.. i figured you could do it all with 2 but then remembering the rf602 one is a transmit and one is a receive (permanently) as the 603... it decides.. so each need a hotshoe in case one is in place of the other...

I fail to be convinced of the need for the rf603s to be honest.

As opposed to another trigger? Or just generally?

Sorry, compared to the rf602, of which I have about 8. There were so many improvement they could/should have made to it, but the features of the rf603 are not improvements in my opinion.

they still didnt add a locking thing to the mount to keep it on the camera. the old ones fell off the hot shoe mount so easily.

I can see "getting by" without having a lock on the transmitter if that is it's only purpose (I could justify a little gaffer's tape or something for security). But to expect someone to attach a $100+ flash to the upper hotshoe - then not be able to secure it to the camera? Not a chance!

That and the lack of the 1/4-20 threads on the bottom may actually be a deal-breaker for me on the 603's. RF602 units are still cheap and available, yet my cheap PT-04s are still pretty reliable for the most part. Decisions... decisions...
