Hi all,

I currently have a 40D which I'm very hppy with, but would like to supplement it with a FF camera. Budget will only allow for 5D classic or 1Ds MK1. Which would you go for? I would mainly use it for portraits.

Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

Thanks

David

I love the 1D series and would really enjoy having a 1dS (at the right price). But for portraits mostly I believe I would go with a 5D.
The original 1DS is getting a little long in the tooth and if it has a mechanical failure it could prove to be quite costly compared to the 5D.
Both are fine cameras, and they both would do an excellent job at taking portraits.

1Ds1 for me hands down. I had a 1Ds1 that I just sold because I upgraded to the Mark 2 and didn't need the Mark 1 anymore. The 1Ds1 was my first FF and absolutely loved it. Also had a 5Dc for a short period of time, sold it because I couldn't get used to a non 1D body anymore.

BTW, I never had any issues with my 1Ds1. Sure it has it's cons but if you can live with it's limitations, the images from the camera are incredible.

I tried a 5D and did not like the ergonomics of it. I bought a 1DS, and still use it. Love it.
I think the AF works better in low light situations better with the one series, and the auto exposure is very consistent on the one series. It's also more environmentally sealed.
Possibly the 5D will give better high ISO performance, but I cannot say for sure. And possibly the battery life is better with the 5D, but again, I can't say for sure.

5D for the bigger resolution and high ISO capability. But 1Ds has better AF system.

Is the 1DMKI full frame? I thought all 1 series bodies were crop?

Any one series with the letter "S" in the model designation is FF. So far that would be:
1DS
1DSMk2
1DSMk3
.....and the probably soon-to-be-released 1DSMk4

I'd take the 5D if you are using it along side of your 40D because of the control layout.
I had a 1D along with a 5D and 50D and I sold the 1D because the difference in controls when trying to use two cameras was messing me up.
On it's own the 1D was the better camera in my opinion and on a single camera situation would be my choice.

That concept was certainly true for me as well. Only kind of the flip side of it. I was using a 20D and a 50D, and then I bought my first one series. I liked it so much better, I sold the 20D and 50D, and bought two more one series.

I had the 1DS as well and it was a great camera, but i sold it for a 5D, for what I shoot the 5D works better for me. The 1DS is a great camera and i really miss the feel of the 1 series but the 5D, for my style ( portraits, static objects) is my choice

I had a 1DsII for a while and wasn't too impressed with it's higher ISO capability. That and it's lack of MFA were my biggest gripes about it really. A crop suited me better for what I shoot right now but I can see me adding a 5dc or 5DII at some point but keeping my 7D. To the original poster, a 5D classic will do what you need just fine.

Really? I find that the ISO1600 and 3200 files clean up very nicely with a bit of NR, and any remaining noise isn't objectionable at all.

Thanks for the replies; much appreciated. Just to confuse things a bit more, if I could push the budget a bit, would you still say 5d classic over a 1ds mk ii??
