I currently have a 30D and I'm wanting to get a little better Image quality. I'm considering a 5D classic for this improvement. My hesitation is on the focussing. Some of the comments I read about the 5D is the focussing is not that good for moving objects. I have two kids in H.S. active in sports. I love to take pictures of their sporting events. That would just be a small piece of what I'd like to do with the camera. Can someone here give me some advise and let me know if the 5D will focus as well or better than the 30D?

Two factors come to mind: current lenses and the level of satisfaction with the AF of your 30D.

On the topic of lenses, do you have EF-S lenses? If so, you will need to replace them with EF lenses. This is no small consideration as it could prove somewhat costly.

Regarding the 30D AF, if you have found it lacking in any of your photographic pursuits so far, you will most likely be disappointed with the 5Dc's AF overall. It has a great center point, but fairly poor outer points (esp. in low light). My suggestion is to test one first.

Also, take a 7D for a spin and see what you think. It is a fantastic jack-of-all-trades camera, and it will work with all of your current lenses. If the HS sports take you indoors, you will greatly appreciate the native ISO 6400 of the 7D.

Cheers.

I have no EF-S lenses and am fairly happy with the lenses I have...... Canon 85mm F/1.8, Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8, and a Canon 70-200 F/4.0. I feel the 30D is adequate on the focussing - it could be a touch faster. In AI servo it seems I have to track the subject for a bit and then it gets a fairly decent picture. What entices me about the 5D is the full frame sensor and I can use my current lenses with this camera. I do have a buddy who may let me try out his 7D, but I don't know of anyone close by with a 5D
