Guys im looking at grabing a new zoom lens. In the 70-200mm range. Now i can get the

Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM for $2169 brand new
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM For $1200 brand new

I will be shooting my brothers wedding next year aswell so gotta keep that in mind.

I shoot cars 80% of the time and ill be heading to a few drift events soon. But not alot.

What lens would u guys recommend? Im heading more towards the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM

I just purchased the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4. I looked at the other two you mentioned as well as Tamron and Sigma. I chose the f4 for the following reasons: I shoot a lot outdoors sports during the day - Don't really need the f2.8 for that. I will use the lens for portraits - Lens is much lighter than the f2.8 and again, don't need f2.8 for portraits. Lastly, I just could not justify $600 for one f-stop that I personally would not have much need for. I hope this helps!!

Really depends on what you can afford. The F/4 is pretty much useless in low light conditions. I don't use mine unless there's plenty of light or I'm using a tripod. You can not go wrong with the MKII.

I don't shoot motorsports but I do have the EF 70-200 f/4L and I can speak to it.

It's a fantastic lens but not necessarily for low light. It squeaks by for that on my 5D II with it's great high ISO quality but it's great when light is not a problem. Plus it's relatively small and light compared to it's big brothers.

I love it and having used both 2.8 versions, this in my opinion has superior optical qualities. People say the f/4 IS has the best IQ. That may, be but I haven't used it, however the non IS f/4 is really good and shows no noticeable degradation with a 1.4x TC attached. The AF has also always been very snappy and accurate given enough light and good camera AF.

I love it for a portrait lens in the 100-200mm range. Very flattering and has nice bokeh.

I've shot cars (still and racing) as well as bikes with the 70-200 f/4L IS and thought it was fantastic. If you have the funds then the 2.8ii is a no brainer but the f/4L IS was flawless for me while I had it..

I would look more towards your bothers wedding, as any of the ones you listed will handle the car photos. Do you know yet where he is going to get married, or what the lighting will be like at the location? If it is outside the 70-200 F/4L or F/4L IS will do fine. But if it is inside then you may want to go with the 70-200 f/2.8L or f/2.8L IS MK II. Also, consider whether or not you will be using a tripod, if not you might want to lean more towards an IS version of the ones you choose. Based on your original post I would recommend the 70-200 f/2.8L IS MK II, and pairing it with the 24-70 f/2.8L that you already have you should be able to do the wedding with no problems, no matter what the conditions are.

thanks for the replys, the wedding is at a winery. So it will be shot out doors, where the drift tracks are here, its where 80% of the storms start so its normally always abit overcast. Think in the long run its worth getting the mkii? Money isn't a problem its just weather its worth spending the dollars on something i may not really need

In the long run it's worth having the f/4, even if you don't use it much. As for the wedding, in your place I'd rent the f/2.8 IS for the few times I might need the IS.

good decision, I shoot cars 95% of the time and the 70-200 is my main lens by far. I need it to get nice DOF, panning shots, trackday shots where everything sub 100mm is too short, driftdays, etc...

I use a 70-200 2.8 IS mk1, and I don't want anything without IS anymore
